NORTH WALES REGIONAL ATHLETICS COUNCIL

MINUTES OF THE MEETING HELD ON FRIDAY 25th NOVEMBER, 2016

AT EIRIASPARK LEISURE CENTRE, COLWYNBAY

Present: P. Brooks (P.B.), D. Davies (D.D.), E. Brewer (E.B.), R. Frost (B.F.), R. Cheetham (R.S.), D. Longley (D.L.), R. Jones-Norris (R.M.), B. Edwards (B.E.), B. Harris (B.H.), D. Harris (D.H.) and S. McCormack (S.M.).

1.Apologies for Absence:Crispin Backshall, Rob Mackey, Andrew Bowyer, Steve Livett, Mike Blake and Arwel Lewis.

Crispin Backshall had been unable to attend, so Bob Frost chaired the meeting.

2.Minutes of the last meeting and Matters Arising: (previous minutes in italics): Accepted as a true record.

2.1: 3.2D.H. reported that that it had been agreed that gold, silver and bronze medals would be awarded at “open” track and field (t&f) National championships.

2.2 6.2.1 D.D. reported that it had been agreed at the W.S.A.A. A.G.M., that they would not introduce triple jump in their championships for under 18 athletes.

3: Welsh Athletics A.G.M., report: D.D. and D.H. spoke on the Governance Review, which the A.G.M. had agreed to implement and P.B. spoke on the merging of the road running and cross country committees. With regard to the latter, the committee secretaries have been appointed for a twelve-month period only and the merging of the committees will be accomplished over that time span.

4.0 Treasurer’s report:

4.1 D.D. presented an up-to-date financial report which was accepted. It was agreed that wherever possible, all allocated budgets should be spent on agreed items.

4.2 P.B. reported that the National and Inter Region 10km road running championships will be held in February next year and he would be seeking an advance on the budget for 2017/8.

5.0 Allocation of Road Running Championships for 2017: the following events were agreed:

5.1 (a) 5km: Ffrith 5km and junior races; date to be confirmed (b) 5 Miles: Abergele 5; Sunday 5th November (c) 10km: Caernarfon 10km; date to be confirmed (d) 10 Miles: Wrexham; Saturday 29th April; Half marathon: Wrexham; Sunday 14th February (e) Marathon: Wrexham; Sunday 12th March.

6.0 Officials Secretaries’ Reports:

6.1 P.B. reported that he had been asked to run courses for entry level endurance officials and risk awareness in Aberystwyth in February. Date to be confirmed. D.H., confirmed that the date of the Regional t&f championships will be the 14th May (Sunday). He had attended 2 endurance official’s meetings and reported that the Welsh race walking championships will be included in the English championships in 2017; more Event Adjudicators are to be recruited in Wales; the Bridgend League consisting of 6 Clubs, will host 6 events next year from May to September; endurance officials not currently working are being contacted to see if they wish to return to the sport.

7.0: Welsh Athletics Reps Reports:

7.1Road running: P.B. presented a written report: (i) The Regional 5 miles championships at Abergele were won by Rob Samuel and Helen Davies; the event also included the annual match against Staffordshire and Cheshire. While both the men’s and women’s events had been lost, the North had fielded a very young squad and 7 of the 12 athletes had produced p.b.’s. He thanked Abergele Harriers for their sponsorship of the North’s teams. (ii) The Inter Area match in Telford on 11/12, hosted by Midlands A.A., clashes with the Welsh Inter Region cross country championships which are being held on 10/12. Wales have decided not to send teams to Telford, but invited Regional teams to attend. He has selected teams of athletes that only wanted to run in the 10km road race and not the cross country event. (iii) Russell Bentley (Eryri) won the Snowdonia marathon in 2:35:05. The race also included the Welsh championships for Masters and he gave details of other medal winners. (iv) The Nick Beer 10km has been awarded the National and Inter Region championships for 2017. The race is to be held in Llandudno on 12th February next. (v) The organisers of the Conwy half marathon have reported that there were instances of runners taking part in race numbers allocated to others, without prior notification. He has asked for evidence and this will be discussed at the next Welsh Athletics road running committee meeting.

7.2 Track and Field: D.H. appealed for more officials to volunteer for the Regional championships next year.

7.3: Cross Country: No report.

7.4: Schools: No report.

7.5: Fell/Mountain and Trail: No report.

7.6: Rules and Eligibility: No report.

8.1: Development Officers:

8.1.1: E.B. presented a written report, covering: (a) upcoming t&f events, all at Deeside: sprints workshop 26/11, jumps workshop 3/12 and hurdles workshop 17/12 (b) other events: 26/11 N.W.C.C.L. Treborth; 3/12 N.W.J.C.C.L. and presentation, Wrexham; Llanberis fun run: 18/12;

8.1.1. (ctd.) N. E. Wales Sportshall, Llangollen 29/11; Beginners running group, 5/12 Rhyl (c) Club Solutions website (d) training and development (e) disability athletics.

8.1.2 Barry Edwards presented a written report on: (a) 500 athletes competed in the Anglesey Sportshall primary round one (b) Academi Eryri has a new intake and a new Academi has been set up in Coed-y-Brenin (d) Startrack camps and Denis Doyle’s sprint workshop (e) 4 Leading Athletics workshops held (f) A Streetgames pot of £2,000 has been procured and applications are welcome for Community Chest projects (g) Events are planned for Anglesey Circuit (h) details of forthcoming events, including the Regional indoor t&f championships entry forms and various schools events in 2017.

9.0 General Council: No issues.
