Background

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is an open-access festival and is the largest arts festival in the world. In 2012 over 22,000 participants staged over 42,000 performances of more than 2,600 shows to an estimated audience of 1.8 million. Almost 1m people are in attendance during the three-week festival which brings an estimated £142m into Edinburgh’s economy.

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society is the company that organises the structure that underpins the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The Society exists to advise, support and encourage all participants at the Festival Fringe, to provide comprehensive information services, including ticketing, to its participants and the public, and to promote the entire Fringe as a festival in the context of Edinburgh and its other festivals. The aim for the Fringe Society is to assist audiences, performers and venues navigate the challenges of their involvement and maximise the benefits of their visit to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Our aim is to be a flexible, focused and creative organisation, and to that end we are seeking to appoint a dynamic and experienced individual to the position of development manager (reporting to head of marketing and sponsorship). The development manager will work with the senior management team and board of directors to delivera robust fundraising strategyfocussing on high net worth individuals and major donations.

Roles and responsibilities

The successful candidate will perform a wide range of duties, including but not limited to:

  • Responsibility for effectively implementing and developing the fundraising strategy
  • Responsibility for identifying, researching, cultivating and stewarding effective relationships with high net worth individuals
  • Responsibility for raising income from trusts and foundations
  • Responsibility for soliciting donations, including managing appeals and making face to face donation asks
  • Responsibility for working with senior management team and board of directors to identify priority fundraising projects and opportunities, create compelling cases for support and to deliver the agreed income targets
  • Responsibility for handling and filtering all enquiries relevant to fundraising
  • Gathering relevant market intelligence on an ongoing basis
  • Overseeing the management of donor database(incl. building a pipeline of target donors across all of the identified segments)
  • Overall management of the existing Friends of the Fringe scheme, including line management of the development assistant
  • Overall responsibility for administrative processes to ensure efficient handling of fundraising activity

Person specification

Essential

  • Practical experience of fundraising (in particular major gifts and major donors)
  • Organised, with advanced project management skills
  • Confident communication (written and verbal) and presentational skills at a senior level
  • Confident at building and maintaining relationships with individuals at all levels both internally and externally
  • Willing to undertake travel, with out of hours work
  • Decisive and able to work under own initiative but also as part of a team
  • Commercially aware and able to work in a target driven environment
  • Committed and enthusiastic with positive attitude

Desirable

  • Good personal networks preferably in the Edinburgh area
  • Experience in arts / cultural environment
  • Experience of market research and marketing
  • Experience of line management of staff

Salary and benefits

The salary for this post is circa £30,000 per annum, plus contribution towards a personal pension. 28 days holiday per year plus public holidays.

Working hours are 10:00-18:00five days a week, based in our Edinburgh offices. Some additional evening and weekend work may be required, particularly in the run-up to and during the festival period. There is no overtime entitlement, but the Society does maintain a TOIL policy.
