Must Do List: Chapter 7 – Comparing the Colonies

We will still have mini-lessons and activities daily.This will include a small session of direct instruction after a timed Flashback and Geography lesson. The Must Do list will be implemented in a Individualized Learning Environment. Students will proceed at their own pace completing activities with partners/groups.

-Mysteries in American History Activity: The Salem Witch Trials - Students will act out the trial with a play from the book. They will choose costumes and participate in one of 2 trials.

-Read Aloud: My America The Starving Time: Elizabeth’s Jamestown Diary – Read to students, classroom discussions, questions on the flashback. Students will take an AR test for a Social Studies test grade.

-Unitedstreaming.com: The Diversity of Colonial Communities 1700-1750

Objectives/Learning Targets: Students will describe and demonstrate how the three colonial regions were alike and different. Students will give examples of conflicts between individuals or groups today and describe appropriate conflict resolution strategies (e.g., compromise, cooperation, communication) to use.

Must Do’s – As you complete each Must Do, place them in your drop box folder so they can be checked and graded.

___ *Flashbacks (10 min) (Monday – Friday) These are to be completed each day as soon as class begins. Student will keep this located on the desk while I come around and grade it.

___*Geography (5 min)(Monday – Friday) These are to be completed each day after the flashback. Students will place them back in their social studies folders when finished. All days should be completed even if you’re absent.

___**Reading (30 min): Read Chapter 7 in reading groups. As you read, complete the ISN pages that go with each section(pages 39-41). I will be coming by to check for comprehension. 

___**Vocabulary (30 min): Use the graphic organizer to identify the terms, write the definitions and explain/draw an example for each.

___ ISN (30 min): pg 43

___ Reading Further: Borrow a Reading Further packet from the file holder. Do not write on this and place back when you are finished. Read the passage with a partner or group. Complete pg42 in your ISN

___Quizlet (20 min): All of the above must be completed before you do this. Chapter7– Comparing the Colonies– Mrs. Murray’s webpage under QUIZLET and click on Chapter 7. Play the Game and take the quiz.

___ClassroomProject: Colonial Regions WebQuest:

Students will explore the webquest and become knowledgeable about the similarities and differences of the New England, Middle and Southern regions of the 13 colonies. They will use the WebQuest packet to complete the project. (Introduction, Tasks, Process, Websites, Evaluation, and Conclusion)

The students will act as retired explorers who have made several voyages to the American colonies and work with groups to produce a Colonial Billboard to persuade others to settle in their assigned colony. They may use multimedia or posterboard for the Colonial Billboard. Students must turn in packets with the Research Organizer complete and the Colonial Billboard created (see Evaluation for the rubric).

___Formative: Scavenger Hunt Ch7(you must complete all of your MUST DO’s except for the project before you take the Scavenger Hunt).

___Summative: Chapter TestCh7 (You must complete all of your MUST Do’s and your Vocabulary Quiz before you take your chapter Test. All test study materials come from Quizlet and the ISN completed pages. My TEST DATE for Chapter 7: ______

Can Do’s (These can only be visited when all of the Must Do’s are completed accurately)

  • Teacher Leader: After you have taken your assessments, you may be a leader in a 4th grade classroom.
  • Reading Center: Choose a Dear America book to read. Check it out with Mrs. Murray. These books are worth 2 AR points each.
  • Mrs. Murray’s Webpage Computer Station: There are many Social Studies links/games that can be played.
  • Puzzle/Game Center: United States puzzles and games are located at the back station table by the bulletin board.
  • Message in a Bottle – Longitude/Latitude Game: may be played in the hall with carpet squares.
  • Road to the Whitehouse Game: may be played in the hall with carpet squares.
  • Reading/Exploration Center: Scavenger Hunts and Atlases located at the bookcase mini station.
  • Dry Erase Maps: Locate oceans, continents, countries, states, capitals etc with dry erase boards and erasers.
  • AR Read: There are many Social Study books (ex: Dear America series) located on Mrs. Murray’s shelf for a Can Do checkout.
