7th Grade Reading and Language Arts

Novel ZINE

SEMESTER PROJECT: Students will create a magazine relevant toThe Outsiders and exhibiting knowledge of writing and reading skills and concepts. All assignments listed below are to be completed and neatly bound together to form a small magazine. Students must include an illustrated front and back cover as well as a table of contents. The final product must resemble a magazine.

Due Date: Dec. 8, 2017

Assignment 1:Author Biography - Gather information about the life of S.E. Hinton, author of The Outsiders, and take written notes. Organize notes and type a two-page spread Biography which includes images.

Assignment 2: Poetry – Create an acrostic poem using one of the characters from The Outsiders. Include first name and last name on separate pages and include images that reflect the poem.

Assignment 3: Letter writing – Write a thank you letter that takes the form of a fan letter to one of the heroes who saved the children during the church fire. The letter must be at least 100 words in length and follow informal letter format. Use sample in Writer’s Notebook for format of an informal letter.

Assignment 4: Narrative Writing – Create a comic strip centered around one of the major scenes in the book. Comic strip must have at least five panels.

Assignment 5: Sequential Order - Pick out ten significant events in the novel. Make a timeline of events using a flow map. Include two smaller detail boxes for each event explaining why the event is important. Illustrate the events on the page.

Assignment 6: Analyzing Poetry - Take the Robert Frost poem “Nothing Gold Can Stay” and explain its meanings in the relation to the themes of the novel. Write one paragraph and make a drawing which illustrates your point.

Assignment 7: Character Evaluation - Make a web or map with illustrations of each major character in the novel. Explain the importance of the character in the novel and how the characters are linked together.

Assignment 8: ZineTable of Contents – Create a table of contents that outlines the order of the pages in the magazine.

Assignment 9: ZineCovers– Create covers that are visually appealing for the front and back of the Zine.
