End of Year Questions for Readiness for Confirmation Program

What does it mean to pray?

Prayer is our response to the presence of God in our lives. Prayer is a conversation with God or a message that we address to God. There are different kinds of prayer. In prayer of petition we ask God for what we need or want. In prayers of praise and thanksgiving we adore and thank God for the many gifts and blessing we enjoy. Meditation or reflection leads to prayer.

What are the Seven Sacraments?

Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist

Sacraments of Healing: Reconciliation, Anointing of the Sick

Sacraments of Service of Communion and Mission: Holy Orders, Matrimony

Who is Jesus?

Sometimes he is called the God-man. He possesses both divine and human qualities. Jesus is God’s son, the second person of the Trinity. He is also Mary’s son. While remaining fully divine, he became fully human. Jesus was human in every way, but he did not sin.

What do Catholics believe regarding the Holy Eucharist?

When we celebrate the Eucharist, we do more than reenact the Last Supper. We also reenact Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. The bread and wine actually change into the Body and Blood of Christ. This change occurs during the consecration. The word eucharist comes from a Greek word that means “thanksgiving.”

Why do we believe as Catholics that weekly Mass attendance is important?

“The Eucharist, Source and Summit of the Christian Life” – truly, the Eucharist stands at the heart of our Catholic tradition of faith. There can be no catechetical task that is more urgent than preparing children to participate fully, consciously, and actively in that which is the source and summit of their Christian existence.

For all loving relationships to grow, time and effort are necessary. For us to grow in a loving relationship with God, we need that same kind of time, effort and consistency. Sacraments have traditionally been the primary means by which we grow in God love, most especially the Eucharist; where we encounter and receive Christ’s real presence. Sunday has traditionally been our day of worship. Church law requires Catholics to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days.

What do Catholics believe about Mary?

Mary is the Mother of God. She gave birth to Jesus who is God. The Immaculate Conception affirms, or teaches us, that Mary was preserved from original sin. From the first moment of her conception, she was free from the stain of sin, including original sin- and remained so forever. The doctrine of the Assumption affirms, or teaches us, that Mary was taken up into heaven body and soul. We do not know if she ever died, we know that her purpose on earth had been fulfilled.

What do we believe about the bible?

Scripture is the Word of God written down for our instruction and our salvation.

The Old Testament is a collection of forty-six books. The Old Testament is the name that Christians give to the bible of the Jews. It is the story of our Jewish ancestors in faith. The Jewish people refer to their bible as the Holy Scriptures.

The New Testament is a collection of twenty-seven books. There are four gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The writings of the New Testament began about twenty years after the death of Jesus.

The Old Testament tells the story of how God created the world and its inhabitants and how God guided and redeemed the Jewish people from the consequences of sin. To redeem means “to free, or to save, people from sin.” The New Testament tells the story of how Jesus’ life and death redeemed us.

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
