Walkers Stadium, Leicester, Friday 25th February 2011

Glasses were raised and a toast made to Canterbury Bowling Club at the Men’s Annual Dinner and Presentation of Bowls England at the Walkers Stadium at Leicester City Football Ground on Friday 25 February 2011. The Citation was read by Alistair Hollis, the Development Officer of Bowls England and the toast was made to the Canterbury Bowling Club for winning the Club of the Year Competition for 2010. Fourteen members of the Club attended the Presentation and the following is part of the Citation which explains why the Canterbury Club was selected above all other entries in England to receive the Award:

Canterbury Bowling Club have demonstrated just what can be achieved in terms of recruiting, retaining and caring for members of all ages and abilities. They receive the award in recognition of its promotional work, recruitment of new members and charitable efforts. Since moving to its new site nine years ago, members have worked together in teams to improve and develop the Club and our assessor concluded that this is not a Club—it is 242 people working together as a team.

Canterbury Bowling Club is also very active within the community, with visits by local businesses and groups, including the local Scouts and Parkinson Disease Society, being supported by the Club’s own coaching team. If that was not enough, it also achieved a five-star catering award from its local council.

Receiving the Award from the President of Bowls England, Mr Chris Smith , Canterbury President Mike Talbot, was assisted by Immediate Past President Win Thomas and Club Development Officer June Strouts who jointly produced the Club’s Presentation for the Award.

Members of Canterbury Bowling Club are justifiably very proud of what they have achieved since the end of the year 2000 when they took possession of their purpose-built Clubhouse, extensive grounds and newly-laid greens in South Canterbury Road. The bowling greens and facilities are regarded as some of the best in the County and has attracted prestigious County games and tournaments to the City.

The Club has an Open Day on Saturday, April 30th between 10 am and 4 pm and welcomes anyone who would like to come to see its premises and, if they wish, to try their hand at the game of Bowls. All prospective members can visit at any time and will be given a warm welcome.
