STATE SKATERS TAKE PART IN EVENT NAME

IN CITY, STATE

CITY, State (Date) – Several skaters with State ties will compete or play a role in theevent namewhen it kicks off Weekday, Month Day at the Venue in City, State. The event, sanctioned by U.S. Figure Skating, is hosted by theClub Name. More than ### skaters will vie for a title in men’s, ladies, pairs and ice dancingand a chance to compete at the 2011 U.S. Championships in Greensboro, N.C., January 22-30, 2011 or the 2011 U.S. Junior Championships in Salt Lake City, Utah, Dec. 13-18, 2010.

The event begins Thursday with the Opening Ceremonies, choreographed by NAFSC Skating Director Deb Coppinger of Portland. A group of NAFSC’s top freestyle skaters, ages 12-16, will perform to “O…Saya” from the Slumdog Millionaire movie soundtrack: Meaghan Monaghan of Cape Elizabeth; Emily Bolles of Yarmouth; Morgan Sewall of Scarborough; and Elizabeth Stewart, Gemma Carter and Jennifer Greene, all of Falmouth. The opening will also feature performances by Sharper Edge, a synchronized skating team in the X division from Dover, New Hampshire; and the new NAFSC synchronized skating team, skating to the title track from Mamma Mia. The NAFSC team, coached by Lori Johnson of Portland, consists of eight local-area skaters: Maggie Nolan of Cumberland; Kate Corwin, of Yarmouth; Caroline Denoia and Caroline Samaras, both of Falmouth; Leah Israel of Cape Elizabeth; and Cecilia Kusturin, Katie Kusturin and Beth Kusturin, all of Gorham.

Skaters with Maine ties competing at the event include the following:

Nancy Peterson, a Saco native and graduate of Thornton Academy,will compete Friday in the masters division with Esprit de Corps, a team from the Hayden Recreation Center in Lexington, Mass. Peterson learned to skate at the Biddeford Ice Arena at age 14 andhas rediscovered her love of the sport and competition as an adult. She is aVP withNHC Group, Inc., and editor of Workforce50.com,in Marlborough, Mass.This is herfourth appearance at the U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships.

Sarah Parrish, a 2008 graduate of ColbyCollege in Waterville, will compete Saturday in the adult division with Esprit de Corps, a team from the HaydenRecreationCenter in Lexington, Mass. Parrish, who established the Colby Maineliners, the state’s first collegiate synchronized skating team, is currently pursuing a graduate degree in art history at BostonUniversity. This is her ninth year at the championships. Before college, Parrish competed for the 17-time U.S. champion Haydenettes.

Samantha Mick from South Berwick will compete Saturday in the collegiate division with the University of New Hampshire Figure Skating Team based in Durham.Vice president of the team, Samantha, a sophomore, is pursuing a dual major in communication and justice studies. This is her second time at the U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships and her 14th year on the ice.

Other synchronized skaters with Maine ties will volunteer at the event:

Kelly Hedman of Falmouth and Stacy McAllister of Brownfield, both of whom currently compete with the Orange Experience, a collegiate team at Syracuse University in Syracuse, N.Y.; a 2007 graduate of Syracuse, Alexa Ainsworth of Cape Elizabeth, who competed at the U.S. Synchronized Championships twice with the Orange Experience; and Barbara Winkler of Old Town, who previously competed with the Essex Blades of West Orange, New Jersey.

The Local Organizing Committee for the competition is chaired by NAFSC president Alan E. Wolf of Falmouth; U.S. Figure Skating judge Glenda J. Winn of Belgrade; and NAFSC test chair Diane Huntley of Coopers Mills. U.S. Figure Skating judge Ann T. Fauver of Kennebunk will serve as the chief referee.
