Introduction

At Saab, we constantly look ahead and push boundaries for what is considered technically possible. We collaborate with colleagues around the world who all share our challenge – to make the world a safer place.

What you will be a part of

Security and Defence Solutions, a business area of Saab, offers command and control systems, airborne early warning systems, civil security systems and solutions, training and simulation, as well as telecom carrier.
The Security and Defence Solutions divisionCritical Systemand Communication Solutions develops communication equipment for military tactical networks.

Your role

Recent developments in virtualization technology enable emulation of large networks in a testbed setting for development, verification and testing in a realistic environment before deployment. The advent of containers promises efficient deployment and testing of network application in a controlled environment.

The purpose of this master thesis project (30hp) is to set up a testbed using Saab products for networking and radio emulation in a virtualized environment and explore the possibilities with the technology in a military tactical setting. The project specification will be detailed with the successful candidate but the project will contain the following key items:

  • Analysis of key technologies for large scale emulation of tactical communication networks
  • Port Saab’s product for tactical networking and radio link emulation to Docker container
  • Assessment of virtualization technologies for the military tactical domain
  • Document findings in a written report

Target of the assessment can be performance evaluation, correctness verification or security analysis and will be determined in accordance with competence and preferences of the successful candidate. Since the technologies studied in this project are new and under development a key element of the project is to both identify opportunities as well as difficulties with applying the technology for development of communication systems for the tactical domain.

Your skills and experience

This project is suitable for a master’s student in computer science, electrical engineering, engineering physics or other relevant education. You should have excellent programming skills in one or more high level programming languages as well as shell scripting. Analytical abilities are also required for this project. Furthermore, the student should be structured and able to work independently.

The application should include a short personal letter, CV and a transcript of grades from relevant university studies. Upon request the student should also be prepared to provide samples of programming code.
