State of Iowa approved preparation program for teaching licensure grades 5-12 with endorsement in a foreign language, and graduate program for the degree, Master of Arts in Teaching, available to/intended for students who have completed a bachelor’s degree with a major in the foreign language of primary licensure, as defined by the University of Iowa Division of World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, or the equivalent. Languages endorsements for which this program is available are endorsement number 122 Chinese 5-12, 124 French 5-12, 126 German 5-12, 128 Japanese 5-12, 130 Latin 5-12, or 134 Spanish 5-12.

The College of Education also offers teacher preparation for Russian and Italian languages, but not with the M.A.T. degree. Options for added endorsement to teach foreign language in grades K-8, in addition to grades 5-12, depend on the availability of student teaching placement in the language.

Requirements

  • Admission to the Teacher Education Program and the Graduate College
  • Licensure requirements include completion of the professional education courses listed below, and a minimum of 30 semester hours in courses in the language of primary licensure (or a minimum of 24 semester hours in the language, and 6 semester hours in a cognate area) at the undergraduate or graduate level.
  • MAT graduate degree requirements include comprehensive exams and a minimum 12 s.h. of graduate courses in the language of primary licensure or in Foreign Language Education, including EDTL: 6483 Second Language Classroom Learning.

Foreign Language Content Course Requirements for Licensure

Minimum 30 s.h. required, including 24s.h. in the language of primary licensure and 6 additional s.h. in the language or in a cognate area (to be determined with adviser). May include courses taken at the undergraduate level. A Graduate Content Course (see next section) in the language of primary licensure can also count toward this requirement.
