Cluster: Solve real-life and mathematical problems using numerical and algebraic expressions and equations.
Standard: 7.EE.B.3 – Solve multi-step real-life and mathematical problems posed with positive and negative rational numbers in any form (whole numbers, fractions, and decimals), using tools strategically; apply properties of operations to calculate with numbers in any form; convert between forms as appropriate; and assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies.
Purpose/Big Idea:
·  Use the situation cards to develop strategies that solve multi-step real-life mathematical problems. Include in your focus the application of the properties of operations and converting rational numbers into the same form.
Materials:
·  Situation cards
Activity:
·  Have student groups work through each situation card while recording the steps involved in their solutions. Ask student groups to justify and defend their solutions with another group.
Guiding Questions:
·  Which situations did you find most difficult to solve and why?
·  Can you tell me a solution that you found unusual?
·  Which problems used similar strategies for their solution?
