Language Arts Identity Map Project

Assignment: Design a personal Identity Map. Include your character traits, IB Learner Profiles, and the aspects of your culture which help create your identity.

Project Description

  1. Design an Identity Map.
  2. Title your map, “Your name Identity Map”
  3. Date your map
  4. Include all the following in your map:
  5. minimum of 3 character traits that describe you with examples for each trait(written and/or illustrated with drawings, clip art, pictures)
  6. label each as a character trait
  7. minimum of 3 IB Learner Profiles that describe you with examples for each profile(written and/or illustrated with drawings, clip art, pictures)
  8. label each as an IB Learner Profile
  9. minimum of 3 culture features that contribute to your identity with examples for each(written and/or illustrated with drawings, clip art, pictures)
  10. label each as a culture feature
  11. The following parts of your project must be turned in to receive full credit:
  • Project Description (this paper)
  • a sketch of your design
  • a plan for your design
  • a creation of your design
  • an evaluation of your design
  • a reflection on this project

IB Design Cycle:

Part 1: Investigate

In class, students will

  • become familiar with the IB Learner Profiles and think about which IB Learner Profiles they can attribute to themselves right now.
  • identify character traits in themselves and in fictional characters
  • connect the IB learner profiles to character traits
  • investigate the concept of culture
  • develop an awareness and respect for another’s culture
  • explore examples of their own culture and those of their classmates

Part 2: Design

In class, head a separate piece of paper, “Design”, to be turned in with this project. Students will

  • begin to draft a design for an Identity Map.
  • give and receive peer feedback on ideas for the Identity Map

At home,

  • students will complete the draft design for an Identity Map.

Part 3: Plan

Head a separate sheet of paper, “Plan”. Include your name and date on this paper. This paper will be turned in with your project. In complete sentences, answer the following questions:

  1. How long do you believe you need to complete this project? Explain your reasoning.
  2. What problems could you face?
  3. What materials do you need? (computer? printer? construction paper? art supplies?)
  4. How and when will you get your materials?
  5. Do you need resources other than the ones you already have?
  6. Are the notes and assignments from class enough?
  7. Do you need to interview family members for further aspects of your identity?
  8. Draw or write a tentative time table with well-defined, specific goals to complete this project on time.

Part 4: Create

  • At home, students will create Identity Maps.

Part 5: Evaluate

  • At home, after you complete your project, read over the project rubric and decide what grade you think you might get. Head a piece of paper, “Evaluate”, to be turned in with this project.
  • Have you missed something on the rubric?
  • Is there anything more you can do to make your project better?
  • What grade would you give yourself on this project and why?
  • Read over the Language A Criteria rubric.
  • What can you do to make your project better?
  • Be sure to look at each criterion: content, organization, style and language usage.
  • Is there anything that you would change about your project if you could?

Part 6: Attitudes in Technology

Head a piece of paper, “Reflection”, to be turned in with this project.

  • Take some time to think about what you have discovered about your identity from completing this project.
  • In a 1-2 page reflection, comment on the following:
  • What aspects of yourself did you discover from doing this project?
  • How does your culture shape you?
  • Do you think it is important to understand culture? Why or why not?
  • Review the entire list of IB Learner Profiles. In which Learner Profiles do you hope to grow? Choose from those you did not include in your Identity Map. Explain why you are interested in growing in these Learner Profiles.
