REPORTS TO: Director, Advising and Counseling DATE: 07/01/2011

POSITION SUMMARY:

Provide confidential counseling, academic advisement and related services to assist students in selecting and achieving educational and career goals; with emphasis on working with students who are disabled or have documented illness/condition that qualify them for special services within the classroom.

ESSENTIAL TASKS:

Provide academic advisement services to prospective and current students.

Meet with students for Access Services and follow-up as needed.

Review, prepare and produce Access documentation.

Provide support for faculty/staff, regarding students with disabilities.

Provide support for students through counseling.

Serve on various committees and attend meetings.

Assist students in registration for courses.

Arrange or assist in provision of Access Services.

Provide training for faculty and staff in Access Services and ADA.

Coordinate on-campus information publications.

Perform assigned responsibilities, duties, and tasks according to established practices, procedures, techniques, and standards in a safe manner and with minimal supervision.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES:

Work on special projects as assigned by supervisor.

Assist in recruitment events.

Respond to phone and email inquiries.

Study and/or investigate legalities of ADA and other pertinent information regarding Access Services.

Maintain documentation of professional journals.

Work with departmental budget to purchase/fund/reimburse.

Perform other related duties as may be assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:

Knowledge of department and college policies, procedures, and practices with the ability to answer work related questions; and/or interpret and apply these guidelines correctly in various situations.

Knowledge of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

Ability to work with individuals with disabilities.

Understanding of Higher Education.

Knowledge of available resources for college and/or students.

Counseling techniques; ADA, Sec. 504 and other relevant laws and the relevance to Higher Education.

Time management; self-directed organizational skills.

Ability to handle issues with tact, diplomacy, discretion, confidentiality.

Ability to work with others and interact effectively with a diverse population ranging from developmental students to PhD educated faculty members.

Ability to analyze situations accurately.

Ability to quickly and effectively problem solve.

Ability to mediate conflict and resolve effectively.

Ability to respond meaningfully to the needs of individuals with respect and sensitivity.

Availability to work or meet in the evenings and/or on weekends.

LEADERSHIP and COMMUNICATION SKILLS:

Follow complex technical instructions, solve technical problems, or disseminate information regarding policies and procedures; may compose unique reports or analysis; and/or provide extensive customer service to internal or external customers.

Communicate information to guide or assist people; may give instructions or assignments to helpers or assistants.

DECISION-MAKING and ANALYTICAL SKILLS:

Decision-making is almost the entire focus of job, affecting most segments of the organization and the general public.

Perform advanced professional work methods to formulate important recommendations or make technical decisions that have an organization-wide impact.

EQUIPMENT/SOFTWARE:

Use office machines such as copiers or calculators.

Use computers for data entry;word processing, spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, or custom applications.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear.

The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.

This position has no special vision requirements.

Completion of master's degree in counseling

One year related work experience

Experience in working with individuals with disabilities
