  1. COURSE GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: This class presents new challenges you have not had in your previous Spanish classes. It requires you to be able to recall all the grammar and vocabulary you learned during your first three years of Spanish and apply them to higher level listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities. In addition to the grammar and vocabulary development, you will be reading short stories in Spanish written by Latin American and Spanish writers, as well as newspaper and magazine articles published by the Spanish-language media. In-class activities as well as audio and video presentations willgive you ample listening and speaking practice.
  1. COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

A. Students are expected to come to class prepared with:

  1. Three Ring binder with five dividers for Spanish separated as follows:
  2. Warm Up Activities
  3. Class Notes/Vocabulary- must be dated and arranged by theme/unit
  4. Listening/Writing Activities- for all in-class listening/speaking/writing activities.
  5. Reading Activities – for all activities related to short stories and other readings
  6. Homework- must have a complete heading with name, date, and mods
  7. One folder – for graded assignments
  8. Student Planner- for recordingallhomework assignments
  9. Pencils, pens, and paper

**Students will not be issued physical textbook for Spanish 4. Instead each student will receive an access code to use the online supersites for the Descubre and Imagina textbooks. Hard copies of the textbooks will be kept in the classroom.**

B. Grades will be calculated as follows:

30% - Tests, projects, and essays

20% - Quizzes

20% - Participation

15% - Classwork, Listening/Speaking/Reading/Writing practice activities

15% - Homework

Classwork: Will include oral, listening, reading and writing activities which will be completed individually or in groups. You are expected to participate positively and meet the classroom expectations on a daily basis.

Homework: Is for your benefit. All homework assignments should be recorded in your student planner. Homework receives full credit if it is complete and/or handed in at the beginning of class period and demonstrates your best effort.

Test and quizzes: Quizzes will be given one or two times each week, and they may be announced or unannounced.

All tests will be announced. Tests and quizzes will assess oral, listening, writing, and/or reading skills.

Projects: Will be assigned several times throughout the year. Students will have approximately 1 to 3 weeks to complete each project.

Essays: You will be asked to write several in-class essays throughout the year. Each one will be based on some topic that has been discussed in class.

Listening/Speaking/Reading/Writing Practice: The primary goal of any world language class is the development of proficiency in the language. You will frequently participate in authentic practice activities to help you achieve that goal.

  1. Students are responsible for completing all assignments on time. Late assignments will be given a maximum grade of 70 if turned in only one day late (THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE DAILY HOMEWORK CHECKS) and a maximum grade of 50 if turned in two days late. No assignment will be accepted after two days unless a student has an excused absence from school.
  1. Make-up Work: It is your responsibility to find out what you miss when you are absent from class. Students who are absent from school are given one day for each day absent to make up missed work. Students who are absent to attend school field trips or in-school activities are expected to turn in any assignments due the day of the field trip prior to leaving for the trip, and they should complete missed work for the following class period.
  1. Students are expected to follow the classroom rules as well as the rules of conduct for James Caldwell High School.
