JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: Director, International and Off-Campus Studies

REPORTS TO: The Provost and Dean of the College and the Associate Dean of Interdisciplinary and General Studies

PRIMARY FUNCTION: The Director initiates, manages and implements off-campus study opportunities that give all students access to high-quality programs. The Director partners with the Associate Dean of Interdisciplinary and General Studies and an Advisory Council composed of faculty and staff to integrate on- and off-campus learning. The Director will be included, as appropriate, in discussions with the Dean’s Council.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:

1.  Strategic planning and program development. The Director works with the Advisory Council to draft a campus-wide internationalization plan, inventory and review current off-campus programs in light of St. Olaf’s strategic plan. In developing and implementing a comprehensive plan for internationalization, the Director brings together stakeholders from across the campus to coordinate activities and work toward common goals.

2. Supervision of the International and Off-Campus Study Office. The Director supervises all operations of the office, including budget management, visas and SEVIS compliance, logistical support for all off-campus study programs, pre- and post-orientation for off-campus study, and maintenance of the Terra Dotta system.

3. Enhancement of student access to off-campus study experiences. The Director develops and implements strategies and works with other offices to provide greater access to off-campus study (domestic and international), and international research and internship opportunities, paying special attention to under-represented groups.

4. Assessment and improvement of student learning. The Director works with the Director of Evaluation and Assessment and with faculty members to measure intended learning outcomes for college and other programs.

5. Communication. The Director represents the college’s off-campus study programs to internal and external constituencies. The Director mediates general student, parent, and faculty concerns regarding off-campus study and provides oversight of web content and ensures that policies and procedures are clearly documented. The Director communicates regularly with the campus regarding activities of the office.

6. Faculty development. The Director encourages faculty participation in off-campus programs and provides opportunities for faculty members to travel and visit sites as they develop new off-campus initiatives. The Director works as a resource for faculty as the develop off-campus courses and works with the Directors of the Center for Innovation in the Liberal Arts and the Collaborative Undergraduate Research and Inquiry program to facilitate and provide support to faculty members for teaching, undergraduate research, and professional activities incorporating a global perspective.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: The Director supervises an office of 6.

CONTACTS: Primary contacts include faculty members, Dean’s Council, providers of third party study abroad programs, service providers for St. Olaf’s own programs, and the directors of St. Olaf’s undergraduate research and internship programs.

EDUCATION: Essential: M.A. in international education, comparative education or a relevant disciplinary field

Desirable: Proficiency in a world language

EXPERIENCE: Essential: 7-10 years’ experience working in an off-campus studies office or program

Desirable: Management experience; experience in a liberal arts setting

Term: 11 months/year

Shift: Campus office hours: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday; evening and weekend hours are required for special events and travel.
