INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAP of EUROPE DURING WORLD WAR II

Use the map in the textbook, (page 572 blue book/page 579 green book).

  1. On the key in the upper left corner of the map of Europe, color in the box marked “Major Axis Powers” with a color/design of your choice. Then locate those two Axis nations in Europe, Germany and Italy, write the names of those countries on the map, and color them with the same color you used for the key.
  1. Label and shade in a different color/design the Soviet Union, the nation with which Germany signed a non-aggression pact in 1939 and then attacked in 1941. Color the matching box in the answer key with the same color/design.
  1. Label and shade in another color/design the three nations which Germany invaded in 1938 and 1939
  • Czechoslovakia
  • Austria
  • Poland.

Hitler claimed they contained people of “German blood.” Again, color the matching box in the answer key with the same color/design.

  1. Label and shade in a fourth color/design the six nations to the north and west of Germany which were invaded by Hitler’s troops in 1940:
  • Norway
  • Denmark
  • the Netherlands
  • Belgium
  • Luxembourg
  • France

Again, color the matching box in the answer key with the same color/design.

  1. Label and shade in still a different color Great Britain, the island nation that was left to fight Germany alone in 1940-41.
  1. Label the following waterways:
  • North Sea
  • Mediterranean Sea
  • Atlantic Ocean
  1. Locate the six nations of western Europe which remained neutral during the war. Don’t color them, but label the country names on the map and in parenthesis write “neutral.” [See example on the map: Spain (neutral)]
  1. Find the sites of the following W.W.II battles. On your map, mark each one with an “X” and label them:
  • (see example already done on the map: Dunkirk (1940))
  • Stalingrad (1943)
  • Anzio (1944)
  • Normandy (D-Day invasion) (1944)
  • Battle of the Bulge (1945)

  1. On the key at the top of the map, color in the box labeled “Axis Power in Asia.” Then locate that Axis Power, Japan, label it on the map in the box provided, and color Japan with that color.
  1. Label and shade in a different color the regions Japan invaded between 1931 and 1940
  • Manchuria (1931)
  • Eastern China, the area including Beijing and Shanghai
  1. Label and shade in a third color the places where Japan attacked in 1941 and 1942
  • Pearl Harbor in the Hawaiian Islands
  • the Philippine Islands
  • Indochina (which is where Vietnam is)
  • Burma
  • Thailand
  • Malaya (now called Malaysia)
  • The Netherlands (Dutch) East Indies (now called Indonesia)
  1. Label and shade in a fourth color the locations of the following important American victories in the Pacific War:
  • Midway Island (1942)
  • Guadalcanal (1942-43)
