HOPKINSVILLE Tigers

HOPKINSVILLE “Tigers”

Hopkinsville’s “Central Avenue” gym was in use from 1930-1968. It apparently had one of the few “regulation size” courts in its early years.

Hoptown absorbed part of Hopkinsville Attucks (the rest went to Christian Co.) through integration in the fall of 1967.

Hopkinsville and Christian County merged school systems in 1972. Until then, it was city vs. county. The merger divided the county in half: east and west.

Hopkinsville was part of the second “unofficial” state tournament…invited to play in 1917 at Centre College. Coach Mallory and players Captain Sam Torain, Ray Moss, John Thompson, Carl Ashby, John Espie, Walter Page and Harry Yost made the trip. The Tigers lost their first game to Kavanaugh 23-11 & a consolation round game to Danville 15-12.

William “Bird” Averitt graduated from Hoptown in 1970 after setting a region tourney single-game scoring record with 52 against South Hopkins in his senior year. He was college basketball’s leading scorer his senior year at Pepperdine, and played professionally in the ABA.

Chuck Hayslip: native of Maysville; coached at Todd Co. Central for 3 years (72-74); in Ohio for 2 years; then took over the Tigers. Later an assistant at Christian County; head coach at South Hopkins for 5 years (86-90); assistant at Madisonville; gals coach at South Hopkins for one year; then moved into administration.

Daryl Hallmark: was a multi-sport star at Henderson County; was a minor league pitcher for 7 years; had a promising baseball future but his arm went away while in Triple-A ball with the Reds organization. Graduated from Mississippi State; was assistant to Chuck Hayslip at Hoptown, then took over his first head coaching job when Chuck got canned. Born May, 1947. Scored 50 points in a game his senior season--1964. He was a 12-year-old pitcher who led Henderson to within one game of the Little League World Series. Left coaching to sell telephone long distance service...and did very well at that.

Terry Hayes: graduated from South Hopkins in 1985; played basketball at Lindsey-Wilson College in Columbia, KY; head coach at Dawson Springs for 5 years (92-96) before taking over Tigers. A born-again Christian, Terry is a guy who has his priorities straight; one I always rooted for.
