Welcome to Algebra I:

After a brief review of pre-algebra concepts, we will explore graphing and writing equations in one variable, linear equations and inequalities, linear systems, exponents, quadratics, and polynomials. There will be an emphasis on word problems and graphing throughout. By the end of the year, we will have a strong foundation in writing, solving, and applying linear and quadratic equations. This course does have an SOL test as well as a mid-term and final exam.

Algebra 1 is your first year of high school math and as such will appear on your high school transcript. The grade earned in this course will be used to calculate your GPA.

In addition to studying algebra, you will practice good time-management, organization and study skills, all of which will benefit you throughout your lives.

Calculators:

The school has a supply of the TI-83 graphing calculatorswhich will be used while studying linear systems and quadratics, after you have mastered graphing of these functions manually.

Extra Help:

Before school help is available by appointment only starting at 7:45. Please let me know the day before so I can write you a pass. After school assistance is available from the 8th grade math teachers (Mrs. Dufour, Mrs. Martinez and myself) on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. If you have been absent or would like additional help, I encourage you to attend.

Please fill out the permission slip located on my website, or have your parent email me at . I am always available to provide help during your resource block—just ask for a pass!

You can expect me to:

  • Reinforce classroom and school expectations
  • Treat you fairly and with respect
  • Provide help when you need it

I expect you to:

  • Be respectful
  • Be responsible

Grading:

A point system is used to determine your grade. Your grade will be determined by assessments completed in class.

Practice is assigned for each skill taught. This may be completed in class and/or at home. The expectation is that it will be completed to the best of your ability. Feedback will be provided. Practice is probably the most important step in the learning process because it is where we develop confidence and competence in our skills and understanding. As it is a building block in the process of acquiring mastery of a skill, it will NOT count in the grade. However, this DOESN’T mean that it’s not important!

WEBSITE:

Please check my website at: Use the staff link to find my name and click on it. On my webpage you will find:

1. Contact information and permission slip for after school help.

2. Folders where you can see the notes presented for Algebra, Daily Algebra, and Geometry. They are printable!!!!

3. Folders that will contain copies of worksheets and study guides for practice and assessments.

4. A practice calendar for Algebra, Daily Algebra and Geometry.

5. Additional practice websites.

WHAT DO I DO IF I’M ABSENT?

Every day in Algebra is important. That being said, I know there will be times you are sick or other important issues arise.

If you are absent, here are some suggestions:

1. Check my website and print out the notes that were given during class.

2. Read the notes and see if you understand them.

3. If so, complete the practice listed at the back of the flipchart.

4. If not, email me with your questions and ask for extra help (before or after school or resource).

5. Once you get the extra help, complete the practice.

6. Congratulate yourself on your responsibility!

Please make arrangements with Mrs. Sokol for the due dates of your make up assignments.

Supplies:

Please bring your binder, pencils, agenda and book to class each day.

Constant Contact:

My goal is to email parents each week to communicate what we just covered, what we will cover next week, and any upcoming assessments. If you would like to receive this email, please PRINT your email address in the box below.

I look forward to a very successful year working with you and your family!
