Honors Biology 4th quarter Ecology Project

BIOMES

1.  Research one terrestrial or aquatic biome. See your teacher for approval of one that is not listed.

Desert Deciduous Forest Tropical Rainforest Tundra

Savanna Coniferous Forest/Taiga Grassland Coral Reef

2.  Include the following information in your project:

A. Location and Description of the biome

§  General characteristics (3 pts)

§  Global location (3 pts)

§  Pictures (5 pts)

B. Abiotic Factors in the biome

1.) Include descriptions (6pts) and effects (6pts) of the following: (12 pts Total). These are for terrestrial – you may need to identify and describe other abiotic factors for aquatic biomes.

§  Temperature

§  Precipitation

§  Light

§  Natural disturbances (earthquakes, hurricanes, fires, floods)

§  Wind

§  Soil

2.) Chart or graph (of any type) representing an abiotic factor. This should be

made by you – not printed off or copied from a book/other source. (4 pts)

C. Biotic Factors—include descriptions/examples of the following

§  Plant life (5 pts)

§  Animal life (5 pts)

§  Identify any endangered species and why they are endangered. (4pts)

§  Symbiotic relationships: List three different symbiotic relationships and explain why they are considered to be symbiotic (6 pts)

D. Human Interactions

§  Include human impact on the biome (positive/negative) (4 pts)

§  Impact of biome on national/world economies (positive/negative) (3 pts)

3.  Choose one of the following options to report the information you learned:

A.  Written report-- 2-4 pages double spaced, typed with 1-inch margins and reasonable font size (max. 12 Arial), proper grammar and spelling. The report must include, but is not limited to, the required information.

B.  A 3-D display—a 3-D display of the required information.

4.  Either project choice must have:

§  A separate bibliography attached to the back of it with sources properly documented and includes 3 sources of at least 2 different types (one must be a hardcover book).

§  A title page including ID information (name, date, period) for option A, or a clearly visible title and ID information (name, date, period) for option B.

5.  Any variation from the requirements will result in point deductions. Each project is worth a maximum of 70 points. You will be evaluated on the following:

Required Content— 54 pts. Creativity — 4 pts.

ID information—5 pts. Grammar—4 pts.

Bibliography—3 pts.
