  1. Introduction to History of Medicine. Doctors, their education and social position since antiquity to the end of 18th century.
    History of medicine as a science; its concerns, methods of investigation and sources of study.
    Teaching of medicine in the ancient civilisations of Mediterranean region. Arabic doctors. Medicine of the early Medium Ages: secular medical schools of Salerno and Montpellier. The first universities. Influence of the Renaissance philosophy on medical education.

  1. The early history of surgery.
    Pre-historical roots of surgery. Surgery in ancient civilisations. The impact of the increasing knowledge of anatomy and general medicine on the development of surgery through centuries. Unsolved problems, which stood in the way of surgery until the half of 19th century.

    Struggling with pain and infection – the beginnings of anaesthesia, asepsis and antisepsis. `First anaesthetics: nitrous monoxide, ether, chloroform. Local anaesthesia. Semmelweiss, Pasteur, Lister, Koch and their achievements. Solving the problem of bleeding control during and after surgical operation. Development of surgical specialties.
