GREEN SHIRT UMPIRE PROGRAM2015

Wanneroo Districts Netball Association

Application Pack

The Green Shirt Umpiring Program is a practical umpiring course that was introduced to netball associations in 2007 and has continued to grow each consecutive year since its inception.

It is aimed at developing and training beginner umpires, of all ages, to ultimately attain their National Umpiring badge.The Program willrunprimarily on Saturdays for the 15 week 2014 Winter Season. Games will be allocated in any of the following timeslots:

  • 9.45am
  • 11.15am
  • 1pm

The Green Shirt Program aims to:

Make new officials easily identifiable, so that they are easy to recognize and support.

Raise awareness and increase the recognition and support of new officials.

Assist in reducing the pressure and lessening abuse and conflict directed towards new officials

Create a culture of support for these new officials through the education of players, spectators, coches and the media

As the issue of abuse towards officials are increasing and the number of officials decreasing, Netball WA, along with the assistance of the Department of Sport and Recreation hope to encourage and attain umpires in this sport.

In this program we teach umpires how to umpire on court with coaching and mentoring. All umpires are supervised. There is on & off court training which we try to limit to Saturdays but, there are occasional times when training/development courses will need to be attended during other days.

Benefits of this program are:

Ongoing coaching by the Umpire Mentoring Team;

Support in the event of issues with spectators, coaches or players

Develop umpiring skills and techniques;

Learning the correct procedures and protocols of umpiring; and

Develop umpire pathways.

As part of this program you must commit to–

Being available for one timeslot every week of the 15 week winter season, unless prior approval has been given for absence.

Umpiring for a minimum of 10 weeks

Reserving or attending off court training with the mentors and coaches, when not umpiring.

Completing a Level 1 umpiring course prior to umpiring, unless already completed within the past 5 years.

Completing the online Section 1 theory exam, unless already completed within the past 5years.

Becoming affiliated to WCNR and Netball WA (which you are if you are a player)

Adhereing to a code of conduct and behaving appropriate whilst in the 'green shirt' uniform and throughout the whole Program

We work the program based on your availability and skill level and are aware that most umpires play and also umpire for their club - we can and are happy to work around this. We just ask that the green shirt program takes priority over club umpiring.

The program will be run by the WDNA Umpiring Development OfficerRachel Williams who can be contacted by email at [email protected]. Phone queries are taken at WDNA on 94099950.
