Applications are invited from experienced and enthusiastic individuals for this part time (7PA )postin a well established multidisciplinary Psychodynamic Psychotherapy service. The post is based in Glasgow which provides a wide range of well established mental health services for a diverse population. The city itself offers a good quality of life with excellent links to the wider UK and Europe with excellent schooling and leisure opportunities.
The post involves provision of psychodynamic psychotherapy services to the adult population of North West Sector of Glasgow City in collaboration with the local multidisciplinary team and the wider mental health service.
The successful candidate would be encouraged to take opportunities available for further education and continuing professional development. There are active education and audit programmes within the service.Out of Hours on call responsibilities will be shared with other consultant colleagues on an approximately 1:30 rota.
Applicants must have full GMC Registration, a license to practise and be eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or eligibility for specialist registration (CESR) or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from the date of interview. The successful applicant will have clinical leadership; shared with another Consultant Psychiatrist in Psychotherapy of the multidisciplinary psychotherapy team based in the clinic and shared responsibilities for providing psychodynamic psychotherapy services to the adult population of North West Glasgow.
- Current Psychiatric Services – North WestGlasgow Area
The current post is based in the North West locality of the Glasgow City Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP). The Head of Adult Services responsible for mental health services is Mr Colin McCormack and the Clinical Director in Psychiatry is Dr David Gerber. The Associate Medical Director for Mental Health is Dr Michael Smith.
The North West locality serves a population of around 210,000 based on 2001 census data. Community services in Greater Glasgow are based in Resource Centres. There are five adult resource centres in the North West locality and West Dunbartonshire: Riverview, Arndale, Goldenhill, Shawpark and Riverside, with an additional team in Helensburgh. The staff within these services constitute the North West Division of Psychiatry and all refer to the Lansdowne Psychotherapy service. The only exception to this is the Shawpark CMHT which has separate Community services are well established in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and based around community mental health teams. These services, in recent years, have been enhanced by the development of Crisis Services and Primary Care Mental Health Teams.
In-Patient services are based at GartnavelRoyalHospital. This is a modern facility constructed in 2007, which provides state of the art accommodation for service users. There are 6 wards; 3 acute adult wards, 1 IPCU ward and 2 older adult wards. There are 117 acute beds provided in modern single rooms all with en-suite facilities. In addition there is a rehabilitation service, an Addictions ward and day Unit and a Learning Disability In-Patient facility on the campus. The in-patient service is actively supported by Occupational Therapy Services, Dietetics, Physiotherapy, Advocacy and a well established patient activity service. There is a strong ethos of positive engagement with third sector organisations and service users.
There is an established Liaison Psychiatry service across the Health Board area. Patients in NHS GG&C have access to specialist Psychology, Psychotherapy and Addiction services. The NHS GG&C Perinatal Service, based at Leverndale hospital, provides board wide services and the ESTEEM service provides Early Intervention Psychosis services. There is also a well structured Forensic Psychiatry service providing community, in-patient and Medium Secure services to the Board area. The Community Eating Disorder Service is another Board wide service based in North East Glasgow with admission beds at StobhillHospital. There is also a dedicated Out-Of-Hours Service across the city providing psychiatric nursing assessment and support from 8pm-9am.
The Lansdowne Psychotherapy Service serves a population of around 190,000 and is of mixed deprivation.
The Lansdowne Psychotherapy Service is a long established psychodynamic service and presently based in a new building in Partick, The Community Centre for health and Care, along with Riverside CMHT and other mental health and community resources.
Community services are well established in the northwest and based around three Adult Community Mental Health Teams; Riverside, Arndale and Goldenhill based in local Resource Centres. In patient services are provided in GartnavelRoyalHospital situated about a mile from the clinic. Adult services have been enhanced by the development of Crisis Teams and Primary Care Mental Health Teams. Lansdowne psychotherapy Service also serves the local older age teams
Addictions and Learning Disabilities though contact with these services is less than general adult.
Psychotherapy Service
There are 6 Psychotherapy services in GG&C; West Glasgow, Helensburgh and Dumbarton Based in Riverview Resource Centre,Dumbarton; North Glasgow, based in Stobhill Hospital; East Glasgow, based in Carswell House; South Glasgow based in Leverndale Hospital; Paisley, based in Dykebar Hospital; and a City Wide Homeless and Personality Disorder Team based in Carswell House. The Consultants from these services meet regularly in the Division of Psychotherapy. There is a wider group of clinical peer support in the West of Scotland Psychotherapy Workshop where clinical work is presented and discussed.
There are many opportunities to develop in this post. There is a large clinical demand for assessment and consultation. The service accepts referrals from General Practice, Primary Care Mental Health Teams and Community Mental Health Teams in the area. Teams may request consultation work to help work with particular patients. Consultation may be requested for in-patients.
Within the psychotherapy service is dedicated clinic for people who have experienced sexual assault or abuse. The successful candidate would be expected to provide supervision and support to the specialty doctor in this task.
There is also an interest in providing Mentalization Based Therapy for people with Borderline Personality Disorder. A Training Clinic aimed at developing expertise in mentalizing has been established providing video supervision, giving the opportunity for clinicians to train to a registered therapist level. The psychotherapy team are supporting skills development for clinicians out with the department. As the outgoing post holder currently leads this part of the service, there is exciting opportunities to develop this part of the service, together with the other Consultant and members of the team.

- Duties of the post
This post is based in The Lansdowne Psychotherapy Service based in The Centre for Health and Care. This is a newly built facility a short distance from GartnavelRoyalHospital where inpatient beds for the sector are located. The theoretical model of practice is psychoanalytic.
The consultant works as a core member of the multidisciplinary team providing psychodynamic assessment and consultation, treatment, and supervision. Other aspects of the role include teaching and providing supervision and training of psychiatrists and other health professionals. In addition to traditional psychodynamic psychotherapy the team have developed their interest and expertise in Mentalization Based Therapy.
It is desirable that the post holder has undertaken advanced training in Mentalization Based Therapy to support the delivery of MBT and development of Mentalizing skills for clinical staff in West Glasgow.
Applicants must have full GMC registration, a licence to practice and be eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to a CCT in Psychotherapy or joint CCT in General Adult Psychiatry with Psychotherapy or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from the date of interview. Non-UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training.It is desirable that a successful applicant would be an approved medical practitioner in terms of the Mental Health (Scotland) Act 2003. It is also desirable that the successful applicant has membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
The postholder will also cover colleagues in line with the arrangements set out in the National Terms and Conditions.
The post holder will be supported by input from fellow consultants for patients whom they may share and will be expected to liaise with staff for patients with whom the care is shared. The post holder will be expected to have clinical leadership of the team and support development of mental health and psychotherapy services. They will be required to ensure proper and safe care of their patients. They will be expected to take part in clinical audit and assist management in development of services including the organisation and functioning of their team.
As part of the psychiatry advisory structure the post holder will become a member of the West Glasgow Division of Psychiatry and be invited, in time to take on roles associated with the development and management of psychiatry in the wider mental health systems. The post holder may be invited from time to time to management meetings to provide a psychodynamic view to a particular problem or development.
The postholder will participate in the out of hours on-call and cover for colleagues during absence in line with arrangements set out in the National Terms and Conditions. The on-call rota covers the whole of North Glasgow covering 3 Hospital sites.An availability supplement of 3% is payable for this work. Out of hours on-call is supported byHigher Specialist Trainees in Psychiatry providing a 2nd on call rota and 24 hour ST/FY junior doctor support on hospital sites. Domiciliary visits, court reports, Mental Health Act/Adults with Incapacity work and liaison assessments will be undertaken as required. The post will have sessional support as required from a Medical Secretary and access to an ST1-3/FY2 doctor.
This job plan is negotiable and will be agreed between the successful applicant and the Clinical Director. NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde initially allocates all full time consultants 10 PAs made up of 9 PAs in Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and one core Supporting Professional Activities (SPA) for CPD, audit, clinical governance, appraisal, revalidation, job planning, internal routine communication and management meetings. The precise allocation of SPA time and associate objectives will be agreed with the successful applicant and will be reviewed at annual job planning.

The post holder will be expected to maintain good professional standing for CPD with the Royal College of Psychiatrists. There is a study leave budget and medical staff are encouraged to ensure that they keep their practice up to date. In addition, the post holder will be expected to take part in the annual cycles of peer review, appraisal and job planning.
The post holder will be expected to remain in good standing for CPD. There are numerous opportunities provided: Fortnightly term time Psychotherapy Workshop for Consultant Psychiatrists in Psychotherapy; Fortnightly term time Medical Internal Teaching in Gartnavel Royal Hospital; multi disciplinary teaching offered by the University department of Psychological medicine, which is based in Gartnavel Royal Hospital; monthly UGASP and CPD clinically orientated workshops, specifically for psychiatrists; Theory and Practice Seminars following quarterly Psychotherapy Sub-Committee meetings; and monthly clinical case discussion group with Northwest Glasgow consultant colleagues.
Teaching/Administration
The post holder will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of patients and the proper function of the clinical team including appraisal, clinical and non-clinical supervision of medical staff and clinical supervision of non-medical staff. He or she will also be expected to participate in the broader aspect of administration and management within North West Division of Psychiatry and the relevant HSCP’s.
Participation in audit or research is encouraged. The post holder will be actively involved in the teaching of undergraduate medical students. In addition, the post holder will be expected to participate in the postgraduate teaching of medical staff and staff of other disciplines.
