Health Requirements

GSS must be provided with a current shot record from a veterinarian and a current coggins or we cannot accept your horse for boarding. If you do not have this information, you should immediately schedule with a vet to come and administer the shots according to the schedule below. We strongly encourage you to worm your horse one week prior to arrival at our farm for boarding.

We generally have a veterinarian administer these shots/tests in the following sequence. It has been recommended by our veterinarian that all of the horses at the farm follow this schedule, and it is easier if everyone is on the same schedule, so we encourage you to use this schedule.

SPRING (March/April)FALL (September/October)

EWT/West Nile ComboEWT/West Nile Combo

Rabies Coggins

Flu/RhinoFlu/Rhino

Teeth and Sheath as needed

Trimming – All horses must have their feet trimmed/shod at least every 8 weeks. We have a farrier out on a roughly 6-7 week schedule. We encourage you to take advantage of our trimming/worming package so that you do not have to worry with signing up for trimmings, meeting the farrier on the appointed day, holding your horse, and paying him.

Worming – All horses must be wormed regularly. Ivermectin wormers rotated occasionally with other types of paste (Safeguard, Strongid, Equimax) are a good system. At least once per year, you will need to use an Equimax or Quest Plus which will kill the normal batch of worms as well as tape worms. Again, choosing to pay the minimal $30 per month for the trimming/worming package will free you from this responsibility.

Sand Prevention – Owners are strongly encouraged to purchase a week’s supply of a psyllium supplement such as Sand Clear or generic Metamucil to be given to your horse every two months to clear accumulated sand out of the horse’s system. We will be glad to give the supplement if you provide it.

Insurance may be purchased for your horse from many different companies. One reputable local company is Starnes Insurance Agency 803-478-8450.

Basic Barn Policies

  • Turn out the lights and shut the tack room doors when you leave the barn.
  • Help keep the breezeways neat by cleaning up your area when you are finished.
  • If your horse poops on any crossties areas or concreted areas, please immediately clean this up.
  • If you are doing your own stall cleaning, please purchase your own rake or manure fork for your own use and keep it with your tack in the tack room. The forks hanging in the aisle ways of the barn are for employees only.
  • Stalls that are not kept clean on a regular basis will be placed on the stall cleaning package for $40 per month.
  • Please dump your wheelbarrows as soon as you are done filling them so that they will be empty and available for others.
  • Help keep the tack rooms neat and orderly. Label your things with your name. Keep all of your tack in your tack area.
  • Shavings are very expensive. Your board covers up to 7 bags of shavings per month which you can pick up from our store next door if you are cleaning your own stall.
  • We do all morning and evening feeding ourselves. Boarders should never feed morning or evening meals to horses at the barn. If you want to feed your horse a “snack,” you will need to keep your own feed, beet pulp, alfalfa cubes, etc. in your tack area in a sealed plastic or tin container for this purpose. Do not feed your horse any hay or grain from our feed room areas. We will feed them a proper amount twice a day.
  • Use the dressage arena for lessons, serious, quiet riding, or training. Use the front arena for jumping, barrels, fun riding, training, etc.
  • Arenas can be used for turnout only if the owner stays on the property to bring the horse in if someone wants to ride. Priority is always given to riders.
  • In order to share our turnout with all of the horses and owners at the barn, horses should not be left out on the pasture longer than about 2 hours per day.
  • The barn should be a calm, steady environment for both horses and riders. Please keep noise and confusion in the breezeways to a minimum. No running or yelling.
  • Never leave horses unattended on the crossties. Never turn your horse loose in the barn area for any reason.
  • Avoid the feed rooms and the loft of the block barn.
  • Try (when possible) to use the outside crossties for lengthy baths. Use the indoor ties for grooming and quick rinse-offs.
  • Avoid the landscaping shed and equipment area.
  • Use the stables road for your entrance and exit.
  • Park in the designated parking areas (around the paddock fences near the block barn or beside the round pen)
  • Please put fans away for the winter and put blankets away for the summer.
  • Do not feed treats to other horses….ever…seriously, not ever!
  • Supervise your children closely while they are at the barn.
  • Please leave your dogs at home. If you bring them, they must be leashed on a short leash at all times, quiet, and kept away from high traffic areas (breezeways, arenas in use, etc.).
  • No smoking in the barns.
  • Please keep all of your things in your tack area. Nothing but halters and shavings should be stored in the barn aisle.
