Getting It All Together
Exhibits for each of the stations Basic Nutrients, Comfortable Living, Entertainment Extravaganza, Has It All Mall, It Could Happen, Mirror Mirror, Money Counts, Protecting Your Assets, Transportation Station, Utility Connection, Child Care Guidance & Development, and Moving on Up.
An Account Book will be needed for each participant. These can be purchased from the Cooperative Extension Service. These will be used on day one of the three day project. These could be funded by a sponsor from the community such as a bank.
Family Matters labels should be printed. Print Family Matters on labels and randomly attach them to the inside page of the transaction register. There are 10 of the same labels on each page. There are 31 different labels. You can print only 1 of each label if you’re working with a small group of 31 or less. Print 2 of each label if you’re working with a group of 60 or less; etc. The idea is to represent a variety of family types (single, married, children, no children, etc.).
Occupation Assignment Cards should be printed. You will need enough for every participant to have one. There are a variety of salary levels. Participants will use these to determine net income on the worksheet in the account book. Spending in the simulation stations will be limited by the participant’s income.
Volunteers will be needed. You will need to get community people to man each of the twelve exhibits. If possible, use two volunteers at the exhibits for Comfortable Living, Transportation Station and Protecting Your Assets. Use the Exhibit Overviews or the actual exhibits to train volunteers. It would be nice to have them come for school lunch and training before the actual simulation begins on day two of the program.
Housing & Transportation cards should be printed. You will need enough cards for every participant to have one. Divide these cards between Comfortable Living and Transportation Station. Individuals will pick up one at the station that they visit first. These are necessary for the participant to get the best service at the insurance exhibit, Protecting Assets.
Charge It cards should be printed for the banking exhibit. There are 29 different cards. You may print just one of each card or multiples that will be used with the Money Counts banking exhibit. It is not necessary to have one for each participant as they draw and then give it back to the banker.
Moving on Up cards should be printed for the education exhibit. There are 25 different cards. You can print one or multiples of these cards. Participants draw a card and then give it back to the Education facilitator.
Plan E should be copied to be used with the Basic Nutrients exhibit as it is one of the food plans. It is not on the exhibit board because these guidelines change each October for the Arkansas Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. About 15 copes would be enough for the simulation.
Housing Subsidy should be copied for the Comfortable Living exhibit. Some of the participants may qualify for subsidized housing.
