EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Earned a PhD and moved to academic faculty position after a successful 25 plus year career as a health care executive. In all executive positions, held P and L responsibility; was responsible for strategic planning and implementation;responsible for development and supervision of multiple department directors and large staff pools; developed and successfully implemented organizational marketing initiatives; maintained standards for regulatory compliance and organizational licensure; and developed, introduced, and successfully implemented new programs. In these positions, which included serving as the Chief Nursing Officer of a hospital, Regional Director of Baylor Homecare, and Executive Director of anNIH funded national non-profit, interfaced successfully at all levels within and external to each organization, and developed and implemented programs for community outreach. Upon the transition to academia, taught a variety of undergraduate and masters’ courses online, and served as guest lecturer for both the College of Business and College of Information. During the 2015-2016 academic year, successfully designed and developed a master’s degree in Health Services Administration with 2 different concentrations, and a doctoral degree in Health Services Research, and shepherded these programs first through the University of North Texas internalapproval process, and then the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) approval process. Both programswere approved in May 2016 for delivery at UNT beginning Fall 2016.Also developed two new online core courses for the new masters’ program for delivery in Fall 2016 (Health Services Administration and Health Information Systems) using the Quality Matters design parameters, and submitted the Health Services Administration course for Quality Matters certification in May 2016. Contracted with the National Network of Libraries of Medicine to complete a funded assessment project, published seven journal articles, presented at multiple conferences, and serve on the editorial boards of two academic journals.

ACADEMIC PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

  • Assistant Professor, Health Services Administration, Department of Disability and Addiction Rehabilitation, University of North Texas, Fall 2016- present

Responsible for teaching two fully online Master’s program courses: AGER 5450, Health Services Administration and AGER 5300 Information Systems for Health Care Management. Developed both courses, obtained approval from the Center for Learning Enhancement, Assessment, and Redesign (CLEAR) for 3 years, and had both courses Quality Management Certified. Responsible for student advising, teaching, research, and community service activities associated with promoting and recruiting for the new Master’s degree in Health Services Administration. Also designed and work within the new PhD in Health Services Research. Responsible for design of several additional new courses: Theories and Measures of Health and Wellness (AGER 5710), Health Services Marketing (AGER 5820), and to development of a graduate health Ethics. Serve on doctoral committees and supervise doctoral students conducting independent research. Responsible for investigating and contributing to the development of an accelerated online program in Health Services Administration, and working to obtain certification for the Health Services Administration program by CAHME, the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education.

Responsible for the redesign of the Master’s and Doctoral program curriculain Applied Gerontology and for shepherding the new programs through the steps in the approval process, both internally at UNT and by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB). The goal of the program redesign was to reposition master’s program offerings as concentrations within a master’s major in Health Services Administration (HSA), which can address the needs of a broader range of students. At the doctoral level, the goal was to transition the current PhD in Applied Gerontology to a PhD in Health Services Research, which will be useful to a broader student audience. In addition, the Health Services Administration core courses will serve as a foundation for concentrations in several other masters’ degree programs offered by other departments in the College, which will broaden the scope of both degrees. I have been responsible fordeveloping and advancing the newly designed programs, which reflected both a name/curriculum change and a reduction in credit hours, through the necessary academic approval processes, and both newly designed masters and doctoral programs were approved by the THECB in May of 2016 for delivery in Fall 2016. InSpring 2016, taught AGER 4450, The Family in Later Life, an online undergraduate course in the Applied Gerontology program, and received a SPOT evaluation rating of 4.7/5.0. This academic year, I also designed twonew online courses using the Quality Matters design parametersthat will be offered in Fall 2016, and which will serve as core offerings in theredesigned master’s major. These courses are AGER 5450 Health Services Administration, and AGER 5300 Health Information Systems. AGER 5450 was submitted for Quality Matters certification by CLEAR in May 2016.

Designed learning modules and prepared grading rubrics and supporting materials. Lead and moderated discussion forums, evaluated student performance and infused discussion with current events and relevant resources.
  • Guest Lecturer, DSCI5320, Quality Control, Fall 2014. Presented case study on successful quality management project to reduce Emergency Department wait time in a local community hospital in this graduate Quality Control class in the College of Business at the University of North Texas.

  • Facilitator,Undergraduate Research Group. The research team investigated the use of Social Media as a health communication channel directed at reducing binge drinking among college students. We conducted our study during the fall semester, 2013 and presented the study at the Decision Sciences Institute Southwest Region, Dallas, Texas. March 2014. Professional Development Activities

Contributed to the grant proposal submitted late summer 2015 by the College of Public Affairs and Community Service to the Heart to Heart Hospice Foundation. The College was awarded a $25,000 endowed scholarship for PACS undergraduate students pursuing a career in aging. The Foundation also gavePACS $11,000 in expendable funds. The award included five $1,000 graduate internships and two $3,000 community education programs, for which I have outlined the content to be presented at each session.

Presentation for the University of North Texas Honors College to Terry Scholars on research projects and engaging undergraduates, October 29, 2013.

Selected to participate in 2013-2014 UNT Graduate Research Fellowship Support Program. The program aims to increase the number and quality of extramural proposals in support of graduate research and study at UNT. A secondary objective is to improve the skills of UNT graduate students in preparing proposals for research grants and fellowships. The program is jointly sponsored by the Toulouse Graduate School, the Office of the Vice President for Research, and the UNT Office for Nationally Competitive Scholarships. Competitive selection was based on the range and significance of the participant’s proposed contribution to field of study, the quality of the match between the ideas and the targeted grant or fellowship opportunity, and the overall quality of the application’s likelihood for funding success.
