COMMENTS:

  1. Ottawa’s Most Unique Historical Site. The Diefenbunker is a fourstory, 300 room, 100,000 square foot underground bunker, and was meant to house 535 Canadian government officials and military officers in the event of a nuclear war. Shrouded in mystery, the Diefenbunker, nicknamed after then Prime Minister John Diefenbaker, was designed and built in secrecy during the crest of Cold War fear, between 1959 and 1961. The name of the facility was given by a Toronto Star journalist who exposed a story of its development.
  1. Mike Braham was a terrific guide & is willing to do guided tours we would like.
  1. It is not recommended to book the 3:00pm guided tour because the museum closes at 4:00pm and will be rushed if not started on time. Earlier tour will allow time to revisit areas skipped depending on interest.

FFO ACTIVITY TEMPLATE

PAD01- FFO Walking Tourof Downtown Ottawa

ADDRESS:We left from the Peace Tower, thru Major’s Hill Park, to NAC, then thru to the Byward Market.

DISTANCE:About 2 km walk

CONTACT: Dianne McIntyre (FFO Member)

WEB SITE: N/A

COSTS/HOURS: We bought lunch for the guide - Dianne.

LUNCH OPTIONS: We stopped at the National Art Gallery - very reasonable - easy to have Soup & Sandwich for about $10. Great view.

COMMENTS/OBSERVATIONS:

  1. Need to coordinate availability of Dianne.
  2. Option -Gail Nevraumont. (Also FFO Member)
  3. If raining - still possible using umbrellas.
  4. Due to time over runs because of heightened security at Parliament this walk was shortened to a quick scoot of 15 min in the rain.
  5. Suggestion to put the walk on another day as many ambassadors are tired from the standing on the Parliament tour and will be standing in the pm at the Museum of History. There are a lot of interesting things to see on the streets of Ottawa and the walk should not take less than 1.5 hours.

FFO PROGRAM ACTIVITY TEMPLATE

PAD09 Gatineau Park

ADDRESS:Gatineau Park Visitor’s Centre, 33 Chemin Scott, Chelsea QC

DIRECTIONS:

CONTACT:You cannot reserve the lodge so simply have to arrive early enough to stake out your claim!

COSTS/HOURS:Picnic lunch at Huron Lodge $5/person

LUNCH OPTIONS:

COMMENTS:

  1. 15 min. allocated for tour of Visitor’s Centre where there is a permanent exhibit: “Gatineau Park: Protecting Nature and Sharing Our History” as well as temporary seasonal exhibits and a gift shop.
  1. We arranged for a lead car (attached a Canada flag to the driver’s window to identify the car) to direct the participants to the Champlain Lookout for a group photo. At that point those who wanted to walk the trail (about a 20-25 min walk) from Etienne Brule Lookout parking lot to the Huron Lodge followed an experienced Gatineau walker from the Wakefield Walkers group. The drivers continued on to Huron Lookout parking lot where they either helped with the lunch set-up or were taken by another volunteer guide on a shorter 10-15 min. walk. The distance from the Huron parking lot (exit to the right of the parking lot and on the left there is the entrance to the trail to the lodge) and the lodge is about 500 metres on a slight incline. The lodge holds about 35 - 40 people comfortably.
  1. The picnic lunch consisted of French bread cut up, rolled luncheon meats, cheese cubes, veggies with a dip, cookies, water and soft drinks.

FFO PROGRAM ACTIVITY TEMPLATE

PAD22 - Amphibus Lady Dive Inc & Double-decker Bus Tour

ADDRESS: downtown corner Elgin Street/Sparks Street

DIRECTIONS:

CONTACT: 613-524-2221

WEB:

COSTS/HOURS:1 DAY guided tour Adults $31 and Seniors $28.00 on and off allowed all day

LUNCH OPTIONS:

COMMENTS:

  1. We selected this tour because it had a multi-language system which included Portuguese. We did have some difficulty at the check in of the tour because they had a new staff member that was not capable of handling the number of clients that competing for her attention. This tour was even busy on a rainy day. This, again, is an example of weather having a major impact on the appeal of a particular event.
  1. The tour is about 1 ½ hours long but travellers can go on and off if they chose. This trip would be more cost effective on a day where ambassadors could take the time to explore a variety of sites. They would necessitate that people have good mobility and were interested. In other words it could be a whole day activity.
  1. It was interesting to most again because of the multi-language system.

FFO PROGRAM ACTIVITY TEMPLATE

PAE13 Spencerville Country Fair – Demolition Derby

ADDRESS:

DIRECTIONS:45 minute drive south of Ottawa at Exit 12 on Hwy 416

CONTACT: FFO Anna Rochon

WEB:

COSTS/HOURS:$12.00 per person

LUNCH OPTIONS:Home Meal

COMMENTS:

  1. I think everyone including the day hosts and other FFO members that attended had an excellent time. The grandstand was covered in case of rain but thank goodness there was none because I think we would have still gotten wet. Some people left the stands and explored the fair after the first “heat” of the derby. This was of course what we wanted people to do – to see a side of Canada that is not found in the city.
  1. This activity only worked because the fair happened to be on, however, if there are journeys in the fall there are country fairs from mid-August until November.
  1. The day ended with everyone going to the “Rochon” home for dinner. There was lots of food, conversation and refreshments. Some ambassadors took the opportunity to pick a few apples from trees in the back yard.

LUNCH OPTIONS:Option 1:Cafeteria at Parc Omega

Option 2:DeliceChampetre (gourmet hamburgers + Belgian fries)

497 Notre Dame, Montebello, Quebec J0V 1L0, Canada

1 819-309-0595 (Average Cost: $10 to $20)BETAYou added Delice Champetre to your Saves list

COMMENTS:

1.Parc Omega: average cost per ambassador (with the bus) is $38 (based on 8 ambassadors) plus we included the price of the Parc admission for 4 FFO drivers (to pay for the gas) into the ambassadors cost bringing the cost up to $45 per ambassador (without guide) and $50 with a combo/bus guide. Very enjoyable in the Fall. Highly recommend a combo/bus guide. Costs will be lower with a greater number of ambassadors.

2.DeliceChampetre: We brought a group of 17 people, which included 8 German tourists. We had talked to the owner, Daniel, a few weeks before and he had kindly translated the menu into German. He even provided copies, with his logo on the back, as a souvenir of their visit. Most of the group ordered burgers with fries, which they all enjoyed - although they found the portion of fries a little large. Some of them also tried poutine for the first time and particularly enjoyed the one with pulled pork. Daniel also allowed to leave our cars in his parking lot, while we walked to the neighbouring Chateau Montebello. Closes Thanksgiving weekend.

3.Due to the size of the group, we rented a school bus from Leduc Bus Lines at a cost of $621.50. This bus was used for the entire day including the visit in the park. We had 41 people on this trip therefore cost of the bus averaged at $15 per person. It encouraged more FFO hosts to participate in this outing since driving was not required. We were given the group rate by Omega Park - $14pp (low season, senior), and the coordinator’s entrance to the park is free. They provided us with 5 bags of carrots (number of bags is based on the number of people in the group).

4.To provide for a more relaxed lunch, we provided a picnic lunch – sandwiches, cookies and beverages. We were able to set up at the picnic tables so people could relax and mingle during the meal. Received very positive feedback from all in attendance.

5.An informal visit to Château Montebello after lunch proved to be quite popular. People had 1.5 hours to enjoy the Château, explore the paths, enjoy a beverage.

6.For the return trip home we took Highway 148 then the ferry at Mason/Cumberland, cost of $25. A better view of the country side and a shorter driving time to return to the Vanier Sugar Shack.

DISTANCE:

WEB:

VISIT DURATION: 9:30 am – 4pm for whole tour 12 - 2:15 at St. Albert

COSTS:Free Tour

Adults: $15 covers lunch and dessert

TRANSPORTATION:Cars driven by FFO members – 2 per car – a driver and navigator

This requires a heavy commitment from FFO members

LUNCH OPTIONS:Option 1: Cafeteria at St. Albert Cheese Factory

COMMENTS:

May 2015 (Mystery Exchange):

  1. Ambassadors seemed to enjoy this. No one got lost and they arrived at the time estimated. Maps, directions and quiz were handed out.
  1. Tour of cheese factory was interesting and wine tasting was fun.
  1. Food at cheese factory was good but the wait for food was unacceptable. A follow up with Michelle Mongrain will emphasize that if the factory is going to accept large groups of people for lunch they will have to modify the delivery of food to an acceptable time (some people stood and waited 45 min for their food).
  1. FFO members from the west end had a long travel time across the city to reach home at rush hour. This could be amended by starting at Hog’s Back Falls and arriving at St. Albert earlier and finishing at Domaine Perrault by 3 pm. Victoria Island and a full aboriginal experience could be done another day. Aboriginal Experience opens May 1 and it is easier to contact them by email.
