Dual Enrollment Information and FAQs 2016-17

What is Dual Enrollment at Oak Ridge High School?

Dual Enrollment (DE) means that a high school student can enroll in high school and college simultaneously. In other words, the student has an opportunity to get high school and college credit for the same class. Only juniors and seniors can apply to take DE courses. Oak Ridge High School has dual enrollment agreements with several institutions, including Tennessee Technological University, Pellissippi State Community College, Roane State Community College, and Tennessee Colleges of Applied Technology. With the help of the Dual Enrollment Grant, this process can save students time and money. Students are responsible for checking the college’s website for their DE application requirements which are different for each college/institution.

What is the Dual Enrollment Grant?

The TN Dual Enrollment Grant program is a grant for the study that is funded from net proceeds of the state lottery and awarded to students who are attending high school and who are also enrolled in another college/institution. For current students in community colleges, the grant will pay $500 for the 1st and 2nd dual enrollment courses. The amount will drop to $200 for the 3rdcourse, (RSCC has a scholarship to cover the remaining costs of the third course). Currently, the grant will not cover the cost of a 4th dual enrollment course. To remain eligible for the grant, students must maintain at least a “B” average in their DE courses. Students are responsible to pay any additional course fees.Tennessee Colleges of Applied Technology TCAT courses are covered in full by the grant in the amount of $300 per course, for two courses per year.

What are the Dual Enrollment Qualifications?

Only juniors and seniors can take Dual Enrollment courses.

To qualify for dual enrollment in 2- and 4-year institution core courses, students must have:

3.0 or higher un-weighted GPA

19 or higher ACT score in Reading and 18 or higher ACT score in English (if the course does not involve math skills)

To qualify for dual enrollment in 2-yearinstitution elective courses, students must have:

2.0 unweighted high school GPA

13 or higher on each sub-section of the ACT (Plan or PSAT scores are used for juniors)

For TCAT courses, students must:

Maintain a B average in the TCAT courses while enrolled.

Can I take classes from two different institutions in the same semester?

No. Students can take a general education course and a CTE course from the SAME institution (such as RSCC), but cannot take one at RSCC and one at TCAT, for instance, in the same semester.

Do I have to dual enroll to participate in the high school class?

In general, no. However, there are two exceptions to this rule at Oak Ridge High School: Automotive Maintenance and Light Repair and Nursing Education (with CNA Certification) are taught by Tennessee Colleges of Applied Technology staff on our campus, and students must dual enroll with TCAT to participate.
