Arun Kundnaniintroduces the lecture he is visiting London specially to deliver:

In Europe and the US, Islamist extremism continues to be the pretext for a growing body of repressive measures, from mass surveillance to mass incarceration and mass deportation. The Paris attacks of November 2015 demonstrate once again how anti-Muslim racism at home goes hand in hand with imperialist war abroad, resulting in a bloody cycle of violence and displacement. At the same time, measures initially introduced in the War on Terror to suppress Muslim political activism are applied more and more to quell growing discontent across the board, hollowing out the liberal democratic tradition. Those politicians and commentators who denounce extremism most forcefully are themselves the greatest defenders of state extremisms and racisms that masquerade as the moderate center ground. Are we living though a new age of extremisms? And how should the Left respond?
