At the RoboCup 2012, which ended Saturday in Mexico City, the team “NimbRo” from the University Bonn won the world championship title in robot soccer. Amongst other things, the robots are equipped with plastic plain bearings from igus GmbH, Cologne.

Even though the German National Team was beaten in the semi-final of the European Football Championship, the human-like football playing robots from the Bonn team has again managed to win the world champion title in the “TeenSize” class. In a range of catagories more than 370 teams from all over the world participated at the “RoboCup 2012” .The “NimbRo” team from the working group “Autonomous Intelligent Systems” from the Informatics Institute at the University of Bonn, defeated the Japanese team “CIT Brains” with a clear 6:3 in the TeenSize final. Apart from that “NimbRo” was awarded with the Louis Vuitton Award for the best humanoid robot and the people from Bonn could beat the strong competitors also in the @Home-Liga for service robots.

The football playing robots from the world champions in Bonn are self-constructions. The Robo team consists of the experienced player “Dynaped” and the new “Copedo”, designed in 2011. To be able to carry out movements smooth and lubrication-free, 16 “iglidur” plastic plain bearings from igus Cologne, are used in the parallel kinematics of the “Copedo”. Smooth and jerkless movements under load and impacts are achieved excellently with tribo-optimized plastics, according to the company.

For any moving elements of the robots, igus, amongst other things, sponsor of the world champion, provides RoboCup participants and other interested people plain and pivoting bearings free of charge. The experts from the company gladly answer your technical questions.
