Fred E. Smith passed away at the Franklin County Memorial Hospital on July 2, 1957. He was born at Morris, Ill on February 8, 1874. His age at death was 83 years, 4 months and 23 days. At the age of 12 years he moved to Smith County, KS which has been his home ever since with the exception of a few years at Franklin. On January 30, 1898 Fred Smith was united in marriage with Laona D. Nyburg. She preceded him in death about four and a half years ago. There are three children surviving: Bernard Smith of Franklin, Edna McNealy of Pueblo, CO., and Zelpha Haas of Smith Center, KS. Two brothers and one sister preceded him in death. Two brothers are living: Lynn Smith of St. Francis, KS and Rev. Ray C. Smith of Norton, KS; also 21 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren. In his occupation Fred Smith was a farmer and livestock dealer. He prided himself on his honesty and fair dealing. In the words of Grace Noll Coward "Friends are Like Flowers" we find helpful thoughts for meditation. Friends are like flowers. I have found them so; The hardy staunch perennials that grow; Year after year are like some friends I know. One need not cultivate tham with great care, They only need the sun and wind and air; Of trust and love, and they are always there. Some must be nursed with frequent trowel and spade. And sheltered from the sun, or too much shade. Friends are like flowers, I would a friend; Whose blossonings no hand need ever tend: A perennial on whom hears can depend.

Funeral services were held Friday, July 5 at the Hutchins Funeral Home with Rev. A. Clair King officiating. Mrs. Fred Kolb and Mrs. Glenn Portenier sang accompanied by Mrs. M.F. McAvov. Flower girls were Mesdames Alberta Haas, Darlene Minkler, Wanitta McGready and Odessa Schrawyer. Pallbearers were Frederick Haas of Smith Center, KS, Emmett McGready of Topeka, KS; Elsworth Smith of St. Francis, KS; Melvin Minkler of Casper, Wyo, Arlie Schrawyer of Riverton and Paul Smith of Beaver City. Internment was in Greenwood Cemetery.

Relatives and friends attending the funeral from out-of-town were Mr. and Mrs. Ralph McNealy and daughter, Barbara; Mrs. Dean Rudolph and Mrs. Leon Bush of Pueblo, CO; Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Haas and daughters, Alberta, Helen, Junie and Veradean, Mr and Mrs. Frederick Haas, Esther Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Hudson and Mr. and Mrs. Clair Walker, all of Smith Center, KS; Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Minkler of Casper, WY; Mr. and Mr. and Mrs. Emmett McGready of Topeka, KS; Rev. and Mrs. Ray Smith of Norton, KS; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Harper of Phillipsburg, KS; Mr and Mrs. Paul Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Shackelton and son and Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Hidloff, all of Beaver City; Mr. and Mrs. Leon Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Elsworth Smith and Mrs. Manie Jackson, all of St. Francis, KS.

Fred Smith passed away at 4:00a.m. on Tuesday, July 2 at the Franklin County Hospital. He had been in failing health for the past several weeks.

The funeral will be held in the Hutchins Funeral Home on Friday, July 5 at 2:00 pm. Rev. Claire King will officiate.
