2nd November, 2003-11-02

Hi Everyone,

Hope you are all well and back in the water training hard, keeping fit, in shape and mainly having loads of fun doing it!!

WELCOME to our new members, Mandy Collins and Joanne Cowell. We are now up to 83

Members this season and there are, maybe 5 more coming on the 4th to DSG to sign up. We are still growing which is great for Masters Swimming. We really need to encourage our friends and fellow pool companions that we meet at the pool when we are training. They will be forever grateful when they realize what fun we have!

SWIM EVENTS

1) Sams Winter Challenge: This was great fun, thanks to those who participated! There were 224 entrants around the country. Bluff Barracudas were the winners, Fish Eagles second and CT Masters were third. Sams notified us in their minutes, that they will review prizes for the next year, as tiny clubs always win, so that is good news for us, although we do most things for fun. The freebees, and ordered T-Shirts, are on their way this week and will be collected and handed out, if not on the 4th November, the 22nd November at the Inter-Regional Gala to be held at Hillcrest.

2) Linden Winter Gala: A great success and it was so nice to see all the old masters members, and to meet new masters swimmers.

3) Northern Masters Short Course Gala was also a great success and loads of fun was had by all, also held at the Linden Pool.

4) Coelacanth 1500 Swim: We had 69 entries, a beaufiful day. Eastern Sting Rays won the cup for bringing the most members from an outside club, which was presented to Carol van der Walt at Ellis Park. Thank you to all that came from near and far and especially to those who helped time-keep and to Ann Hanson and Lorraine Haigh who worked so hard in the back office, and Liz for handing out the badges and cooldrinks. There were 9 medals on wooden blocks that went to those who bettered their previous bests. So come on guys don’t miss this event next year. 5) SAMS Short-Course Champs: Thank you to Gauteng for organising this event.

Unfortunately the rain and lightning caused the gala to be postponed to the 1st Novemb

6) Sun City Dam Swim: Huge success despite the cold, windy weather. The water was warm and clean and we all had a good swim.

7) Easterns Handicap Gala: If it wasn’t for the Coelacanth Club supporting them once again, there wouldn’t have been a gala. The others clubs just don’t know what fabulous hosts they are and what fun we always have when we go to Kempton Park. Thank you to Easterns once again for your wonderful hospitality.

Liz will be phoning all the ladies to bring a salad on the 22nd November Gala at Hillcrest, please we need all the help we can get. Ted Wallace has offered to light the fires and Koos and Charlie are going to help braai. Please offer your help to Liz as much as you can after your swimming is over. The gala will be run by Astrid and Johnny, so no time-keeping is necessary. There will be a small charge to swim, just to cover costs and then the Shield will be handed out by Stephen Kruger (Anton being on holiday as well) at the braai after the gala is over. We need to get that shield back from Gauteng guys! There is no rugby on that day so we would like to see our male swimmers coming to support us. We have been missing you with all the rugby and sport that is on at the moment. Go the Boks!!

and well done Bulls!! Sorry Sharks fans, you know who I mean!

XMAS BRAAI NIGHT

IN OUR THOUGHTS

Maryrillia Hack is still not doing well at all.

Gerrie Dorlas had another big back op.

Ralph is also suffering with his back.

Those who are not well at the moment that we don’t know of, we hope that you will recover soon.

TRAINING TIP FROM OWEN

It is now time to stop the long distance training and pick up the pace.

Time to do repetitions: First a warm up (300m) then 10 x 100m on 2 mins rest, or

20 x 50m on 1 min rest, or both. Build up the stamina and get into the sprinting mode!

Well everyone we will meet soon, keep training, keep our championships in Feb in mind and then we are off to have a holiday, party, and some good swimming in East London.
