Knapp Elementary School
Miss Morrison – Sixth Grade
Welcome to Sixth Grade! In addition to learning a great deal, students will be growing both physically and socially this year, continuing to develop greater self-confidence and independent work habits as they mature into young adults. By working together, holding high expectations, and keeping the lines of communication open, this year will be a positive and memorable experience for all.
Homework
Please refer to page 5 in the Elementary Handbook for the details on expectations for homework.
Students are expected to record and complete the homework on time, as assigned, and with evidence of effort. Homework answers do not have to be correct for a student to receive full credit. However, if any of the former expectations are not met, the student will receive no credit and will be expected to make up the homework at home or during recess.
Homework is designed to be completed independently, but support at home is appreciated if difficulty is encountered. Homework should not frustrate the student, but from time to time, this may happen. If it does and as a last resort, simply sign near the problem area on the assignment and it will be addressed in school the next day with no penalty to the student.
Understandably, emergencies occur and consideration will be given if and when they arise. In addition, there may be nights where there is not a great deal of written homework. On these nights, students are advised to review what was taught during the day, read, complete lessons on Moby Max, or work on long-term projects.
Assessment
Students in 6th grade are assessed in the academic areas of Reading, Writing, Health, Math, Science, and Social Studies.
●Major assessments (tests) will be announced approximately one week prior to their administration in class.
●Math and ELA assessment results will be available in the Home Access Center, (HAC), for parental review.
Organization of Materials
Organizational Binders
Students are required to use a binder that can be divided into sections to keep subject materials separated. The binder will be maintained in good order throughout the school year or the student will spend time as needed straightening it up.
Books and Materials
Students will be issued a number of books and materials. These materials are expensive and become the responsibility of the student as soon as he or she gets them. As such, the student will be responsible for paying for lost or damaged books and materials at prices set by the school district. All hardcover books are to be covered at all times.
Chromebooks
Students are expected to shut down and charge Chromebooks on a nightly basis. Chromebook will be used on a daily basis.
6th Grade Dress Code
Please refer to page 4 in the NPSD Elementary Handbook.
Additional Classroom Guidelines
1.Proper hygiene and cleanliness begins at home each and every day and is expected of all 6th graders. As a courtesy to others and to contribute to a healthy work environment, all students are strongly advised to take daily showers, use deodorant, and wear clean clothes. Students should bring a shirt to change into on gym days.
2.Cell phones must be stored in a student’s backpack switched off or on silent during the school day.
3.Students are not permitted to possess any object deemed to be a “toy” or item leading to distraction, unless pre-approved. Any such items will be confiscated and held for parent pickup or until the school year ends, whichever comes first.
4.Gum is not permitted to be consumed during the school day.
5.A healthy snack is permitted, at any time of the student day, assuming the following expectations are met:
●Snacks must be nut free due to allergies.
●Snacks are not to be shared with anyone.
●Snacks are not to be left in student desks overnight.
●Candy/mints are not permitted as a snack.
6.Students are encouraged to bring a water bottle (water only) to school each day. (There is no water fountain in the mods.)
7.All work, both in class and at home, will be completed in pencil – pens may not be used except for editing, self-correcting, and scoring.
Classroom Management System
Classroom Expectations:
Short and long term rewards will be provided for students who meet expectations of the School-Wide Positive Behavior Support Plan. Please be advised that the primary form of communicating infractions will be via email. In order to preserve safety and instruction, the following 4 statements are the foundation of the School-Wide Positive Behavior Support Plan.
Be Safe
BeRespectful
Be Responsible
Be Resilient
Odds and Ends
1.Birthday treats may be sent in for a student’s birthday on or around his or her birth date. Treats may be shared with the class in the cafeteria during the lunch period. Please send in only enough for your child’s class as delivering treats to other staff members throughout the building will not be permitted in order to preserve the time on task of all classrooms.
- There is no sink in our classroom; therefore, hand washing requires a trip to the restroom. Students may keep one individual hand sanitizer in their desk.
Thank you for your cooperation and support. I look forward to meeting you at Back-to-School Night, on September 19th. Best wishes for a great year in 6th grade at Knapp Elementary!
