SRM/TCI ALUMNI MENTORSHIP PROGRAM

Information for Students

Have you wondered what it’s really like to work in the insurance industry? Do you want to know how industry professionals in actuarial and risk management positions spend their day? Are you clear what career options are available to you as a School of Risk Management major?Making informed career decisions is not easy, but through participation in the SRM Alumni Mentorship Program, you’ll have the opportunity to gain valuable insight from insurance industry professionals.

The SRM Alumni Mentorship Program is a collaborative effort between the TCI/SRM Alumni Board and the Center for Apprenticeship & Career Services. The program is designed to match selected students with an experienced SRM alumnus/a to provide one-on-one guidance and support for an academic year (two semesters). The relationship is not to solicit mentors for internships or employment, but to develop a valuable networking relationship and obtain real-world industry information.

Program Components

Why have a Mentor? An SRM Mentor can help you expand your knowledge of career options and of the insurance industry, understand trends, provide valuable career advice and feedback, review your resume and cover letter, provide potential networking contacts, assist with job search strategies and more.

Interested students must apply for the SRM Mentorship Program with a brief essay on why they wish to participate and a copy of their resume. Applications are due by October 15th and the program is open to junior and senior year students.

Once you have been matched with a Mentor, you will be expected to meet with the Director of the SRMCenter for Apprenticeships & Career Services. At that time, you will review specific program guidelines and protocol, obtain the Student Networking Guide, plus contact information for your mentor.

It will be your responsibility to contact him/her for an initial informational interview. Meetings are expected to be conducted in-person at either the Mentor’s office or the SRM. Students will agree to maintain contact with their mentor at least twice during the Fall and Spring semesters. Activities may involve a half/shadowing day at the Mentor’s office, as well as periodic discussions based on your personal needs and interests.
