MATH DOMAIN / 2.MD.6/MEASUREMENT AND DATA
Grade 2
Math Cluster / Math Standard / Mathematic Practices
Relate addition and subtraction to length. / 2.MD.6 Represent whole numbers as lengths from 0 on a number line diagram with equally spaced points corresponding to the numbers 0, 1, 2, …, and represent whole-number sums and differences within 100 on a number line diagram. /
  1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
  2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
  3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
  4. Model with mathematics.
  5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
  6. Attend to precision.
  7. Look for and make use of structure.
  8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Reporting Standard / Trimester 1 / Trimester 2 / Trimester 3
Operations: Solve word problems using drawing and equations. / Unknown is the sum or difference
(tested) / To 50 with the unknown in any position (tested) / To 100 with the unknown in any position (tested)
Clarify Standard
To be developmentally appropriate, begin work on a blank number line.
 The number line should begin with the larger addend in addition as its first point. In subtraction, the difference begins the number line going from right to left on the blank number line.
Students mark the value of hops and label all the points themselves on the number line.
Task Analysis
1.MD.2 Express the length of an object as a whole number of length units, by laying multiple copies of a shorter object (the length unit) end to end; understand that the length measurement of an object is the number of same-size units that span it with no gaps or overlaps. Limit to contexts where the object being measured is spanned by a whole number of length units with no gaps or overlaps.
Learning Tasks:
Given a blank number line, create and designate points, hops with + or – values noted.
Generate and solve an equation.
2.MD.6 Represent whole numbers as lengths from 0 on a number line diagram with equally spaced points corresponding to the numbers 0, 1, 2, …, and represent whole-number sums and differences within 100 on a number line diagram.

Solve this problem on the number line.
Ann is helping her dad build a dog house. She measured the carpet to put inside the dog house and it was 66 inches long. She only needs 31 inches for the inside of the dog house. She cut the carpet and had a piece left over.
How long was the left over carpet?

Solve this equation on the number line.
Trina wants material 35 inches long to make doll clothes with her mother. Her mother looked in her sewing supplies and found some material that Trina could use. When Trina was finished she gave her mom back 52 inches of material.
How much material did Trina start with?

Assessment Rubric

2.MD.6 Sample Assessment Items earning a “4” in reporting system
Breed of Dog / Length of leather strip / How many Collars
Yorkshire Terrier / 15 inches / 2
Rottweiler / 30 inches / 3
Corgi / 20 inches / 5
Boxer / 25 inches / 4
The Fancy Dog Company needs to order leather strips in order to make dog collars. Look at the data chart.
Use the number line to show the total amount of inches of leather strip for each kind of dog.
Yorkshire Terrier
Rottweiler
Corgi
Boxer
Show on the number line the total number of inches the Fancy Dog Company should order to make all the dog collars listed in the data chart.

Write an equation to show your thinking.
