Degree Checklist for Associate of Art (AA)**/Associate of Science (AS)

Keys for Successful Transfer

Students pursuing an Associate of Art (AA) or Associate of Science (AS) degree program(who intend to transfer to another institution to complete a higher degree)should keep these steps in mind:

Step 1: PLAN EARLY

  • Begin making your transfer plans the very first semester you enroll—early contact helps you stay on track with your transfer institution’s requirements
  • Unsure of your transfer option?
  • Shop around
  • Spend some time on the Internet researching the institutions that you might be interested in attending
  • Make some phone calls
  • Request information about the school and the specific major(s) in which you are interested
  • If you are unsure about your major, contact the Counseling/Career Center at RSCC. A counselor can meet with you to assist you with that decision-making process.

Step 2: MAKE CONTACT

  • Visit the school where you will attend and include a visit to an Advising Center or a faculty member.
  • Explain your career goals and what courses you are taking at Roane State (be sure to always take a student copy of your transcript with you).
  • Collect business cards of those whom you meet soyou can contact them in the future.
  • Be sure to start with the admissions office and/or meet with a financial aid rep.

Step 3: KNOW YOUR ACADEMIC PROGRAM

  • Educate yourself on the four-year institution’s policies for transfer students.
  • Determine what grades will transfer and any other requirements (such as GPA) that you might need to know before you transfer.
  • Your Roane State advisor can assist with interpreting the policies, but it’s up to you to obtain that information.
  • Review the Roane State requirements as listed in the catalog or on the University Transfer Program page of the RSCC web site. There are many advantages to transferring with an associate’s degree.

Step 4: BE AWARE OF DEADLINES

  • Most four-year institutions have strict deadlines for applying for admission or even a separate application process for selective admission programs.
  • Know the deadlines for scholarships and other types of financial aid.
  • Most applications will need to be submitted while you are in the fall semester of your sophomore year at Roane State.
  • Be aware of the graduation deadlines for Roane State (typically in the fall semester prior to commencement ceremonies in May).
