Holidays

Look at what we will be learning – Holidays

Communication, Language and Literacy.
  • Knowing all letters of the alphabet, the name of the letter and the sound it makes, capital and lower case e.g. matching pictures to letters, singing the ABC song.
  • Recognising both upper and lower case letters e.g. A, B, C and a, b, c.
  • Revisiting/learningsh, ch, th, igh, ng, ay, ee, air, ir, oo, ar,or, ow sounds & words with these sounds in.
  • Tricky words that you are unable to sound out e.g. the, here, was, what etc.
  • Saying the beginning, middle and end sound in words.
  • Attempt to write simple words by sounding them out, including keywords, in a variety of contexts e.g. birthday cards, invitations, shopping lists, stories and using a capital letter, finger spaces and a full stop when writing sentences.
  • Reading – use pictures, sounding out and finger pointing to help reading. Asking questions to check they have understood what they have read.
  • Handwriting – practising correct letter formation then moving onto cursive when ready.
  • Maths
  • Counting in ones, twos, fives and tens.
  • Doubling and halving e.g. double 5 = 10. Half of 12 = 6.
  • Number bonds to 10, e.g. 7+3=10, 4+6=10.
  • Addition facts to 10 and then 20 and corresponding subtraction facts e.g. 8 + 2 = 10, 10 – 2 = 8 and 14 + 6 = 20, 20 – 6= 14.
  • Finding one more and one less than a given number to 20.
  • Reading, writing and ordering numbers 1 – 20 firstly then beyond.
  • Problem solving – e.g. I have 7 how many more do I need to get to 10? Which coins could I use to make 12p?
  • Looking at patterns, with shapes and colours and number sequences.
  • Positional language, such as on top, under, behind, in front, next to and in between.
  • 2.D and 3D shapes –Focusing on their properties e.g. counting how many sides, corners, faces and edges.
  • Use of comparative language – faster, fast, slower, slowest etc and ordinal numbers e.g. 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
/ Understanding of the World
  • Looking at past and present holidays & comparing holiday destinations.
  • Knowing what clothes would be needed for a hot or cold holiday.
  • Focusing on learning about different countries and how they are different to England –
  • Things needed to go on holiday e.g. packing a suitcase, beach bag.
  • EURO 2016 – link with countries
Feel free to bring in any pictures or souvenirs from holidays that the children have been on.
Physical Development
  • Working in pairs and groups using balls, bats, hoops & beanbags. Practising dribbling, balancing, skipping skills etc.
  • Throwing, catching, rolling and bouncing different sized balls e.g. tennis, football, rugby and basketballs.
  • Observing the effects that exercise has on their bodies.
  • Sports day activities – running race, obstacle race, potato and spoon race and shuttle race.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development.
R.E: Friends–Children will learn that wecan all make friends,Jesus had good friends and we can learn a lot about friendship from Jesus. Our world- Children will learn whatwe love and wonder about our world and that God made it for us.
  • Have a developing awareness of their own needs, views and feelings, and be sensitive to the needs, views and feelings of others.
  • To negotiate and solve problems.
  • Sun safety, talking about the importance of wearing sun cream and hats.
  • Transition – preparation for moving to Year One.

Expressive Art and Design

  • Making a seaside collage, sketching shells.
  • Looking at art sculptures from different countries and making some of our own.
  • Music making-changing sounds of instruments and copying repeated patterns.
  • Making different countries flags, World cup trophies, football kits and pitches to play our own world cup matches.
