Through cloudy weather and chilly breezes, the NJIT Track team helps make dreams come true. On April 11th, 2011 the track team helped the Greater Plainfield Habitat for Humanity strive for success with their third annual 5k run/walk for the less fortunate. Habitat for Humanity is a not-for-profit organization which buys properties in areas where people in rough times can’t afford housing; they build houses on the land and then sell them to those who can’t afford houses on their own at low prices with the promise that those people will then help with their efforts when they can.
For the third year Coach Adalberto Alonso and his team of athletes assisted this good hearted organization to make their event a success. Helping with the foundation of the walk from timing the event to taking down registration for the participants, the athletes shivered their way stoically to allow the event to raise a grand total of over $10,000! The most successful walk yet with over 160 walkers and runners Habitat for Humanity couldn’t be more grateful for the always smiling and always helpful bunch of young adults who made the whole event run smoothly.
Never complaining, the NJIT student athletes do all they can to ensure the run goes off without a hitch as usual. Music helped to keep spirits high through the efforts of the radio station WDHA Classic Rock 105.5, and the word was spread through the efforts of WMTR 1250 AM to make the run next year even larger! Though the weather wasn’t the best, what the event lacked in sunshine was compensated two-fold in the smiles and cheers from the ever enthusiastic Track and Field team and their leader Coach Alonso. The Track team looks forward to their future chances to help the less fortunate; and are glad to have been able to do their part in helping build new homes.
