Development Centre FAQ

What if my son/daughter is not able to attend the dates for his/her age group but wants to be considered?

Players will be unable to progress to Academy Centre without assessment. Along with their training, assessment is part of the Player Pathway process. The County will still be prepared to offer an assessment session to children who, through no fault of their own, are unable to attend the Development Centre, however this assessment will necessarily be much shorter and less thorough than assessing the player over 8 or 12 hrs of Development Centre training. Therefore whilst a player who misses Development Centre may still be able to be assessed and be eligible for Academy Centre it does create a risk that the player will not be able to demonstrate the full range of their ability.

Assessments may take 2 forms:

·  A one off group session of 1.5 hrs supervised by County coaching staff where all players of that JDC group are assessed. This option would attract a charge of £5.00 per player

·  For a Player who was in JAC during the 2016-17 season, The County would need a report from his/her school and/or club and in addition send a coach to assess the player at his/her club or school in both training and game mode. This option would attract a charge of £25 (coach’s fee plus travel) to be divided by the number of players to be assessed at that school / club session.

·  In both cases, Parents must send an email to the County Administrator () explaining the reason for not being able to attend. Please specify your choice of when / where the player could be assessed. Details about when an assessment could be done during the summer or September should be included.

What if my son/daughter is not able to attend all the dates of his/her Development Centre age group?

The programme this year allows for players to attend 1 or 2 or 3 (for U13/4 player) days and also to select to attend the competition day or not. Whilst the programme will be design to cover the 2 or 3 days, it will allow for a player to attend just 1 of the 2 days or 2 of 3 days. So there is no problem here.

There is more of an issue concerning attending the competitions date as there is the 1 date and this is the time we can see the player in action and see if they can take what they have learnt into a game situation.

The U12 gateway players are a little different and attending 1 day out of the 2 is not a problem.

In both cases, Parents must send an email to the County Administrator (() explaining the reason for not being able to attend.

Can my son/daughter who is U11 (i.e. Jan1st 2007 birth date) be nominated to U12 Gateway?

The County is happy to accept nomination to the U12 gateway group for players who are U11. However Parents and Players should be aware that the player will be assessed as if they are an U13 and not an U11.

The County will give preference for development centre places to U12 players but is happy for Parents to contact the County Administrator () asking if their child can be added to the programme.

What do players need to bring with them on the training days?

Outfield players: Stick, shin pads, gum shield, gloves (if they have them), large water bottle, pencil/pen, writing pad and a packed lunch.

Keepers: Kickers, Leg guards, Padded shorts, Groin/Pelvic Protector, Chest pad, Left and right hand deflectors (gloves), Stick, Helmet, Throat protector, Elbow pads, Shoulder protection (often incorporate with the Chest protector), Kneepads (these protect the knee which can be exposed to certain balls between the leg guards and the padded shorts – if they have them), Goal Keeper’s smock., large water bottle, pencil/pen, writing pad and a packed lunch.

Do goalkeepers get training on their own or are they integrated with the Outfield players?

U15/16/17 age groups: The likelihood is that for a major part of the first day’s morning session the keepers will work with the designated Keeper coaching team. The County would recommend that keepers returning from JAC look at their JAC report and bring a list of the Areas of Development stated in this report, so that these areas can be worked on. For the remaining training time the keepers will work with outfield players. However if an area in a keeper’s skill set is identifies as needing work, the Keeper coaching team will with the acceptance of the Lead Coach take the player aside to work on these areas.

U13/14 age groups: The County is planning that for the first training date the keepers will be trained separately looking at the skills of kicking, save/clear, hands and diving. On the 2nd date they will remain separate from the outfield in the morning and then from the afternoon and for the next day work with the outfield players. However if an area in a keeper’s skill set is identifies as needing work, the Keeper coaching team will with the acceptance of the Lead Coach take the player aside to work on these areas.

U12 gateway: The County is planning to run for the majority of the day, the keepers separate to the Outfield.

What happens at the end of the Development Centre training sessions?

The Academy Centre is the next step up from Development Centre. Players selected for Academy Centre from the Development Centre. The steps involved in the nomination to Academy are as follows:

·  The Lead Coach and his/her assistants assess each player at each session. The assessment scores and comments are entered into the EH System.

·  The comments from all the sessions are then used to produce the General Comment. The recommendation to coaches from the county is that the format should be: areas of strength, areas to develop, general comments.

·  Once all the comments and scores are then entered into the EH system and signed off by the Lead Coach. The County Coaching Co-ordinator then carries out a review of the report for all players. If necessary he/she may refer back to a coach a report for some further explanation or if he/she is happy, he/she will mark the assessment as complete.

·  When an assessment report for a group is marked as complete the system then sends an email to each player in that group to say the report is available to be read.

·  The Lead Coaches needs to send an email with a list of the players who they are nominating to Academy Centre to the County Coaching Co-ordinator and the County Administrator. The County Administrator will then send the relevant yes or no email. This is done through the EHB system using the contact system, which means that all correspondence is marked against a player. The plan is to have squads of approximately the sizes shown below:

Sex / U17[1] / U16[2] / U15 / U14 / U13
Male / 20 outfield 2 keeper / 20 outfield 2 keepers / 36 outfield 3 keeper / 36 outfield
4 keeper / 36 outfield
4 keeper
Female / 20 outfield 2 keepers / 20 outfield 2 keepers / 36 outfield 3 keepers / 36 outfield
4 keeper / 36 outfield
4 keeper

·  On receipt of the report, players and parents can post a comment, which will be fed back to the lead coach.
