COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Fashion Design is a one-credit course designed for students interested in fashion, fashion design and apparel and textile design technology. Content provides opportunities for students to explore histories, costumes, research current fashion styles and trends, analyze fibers and textiles, design clothing and accessories, utilize technology in fashion design, and explore career options in apparel and textile industries.

Note: Additional costs WILL BE REQUIRED as special projects are constructed.

PREREQUISITES: Fashion Level 1 is the prerequisite for this course.

Text: Clothing, Fashion, Fabrics, and Construction.

Supplemental Materials: Computer programs, Internet sites, fashion magazines, guest speakers, Power Points, computerized monogram/embroidery machines and industry personnel.

GRADING POLICY/ ASSESSMENT PROCEDURES:

  1. Grading scale, semester and final exam
  2. 30% Daily work; 70% Tests, projects

  5. 80-89=B

ATTENDANCE: Good attendance is required for a good learning situation. Poor attendance can hinder learning, especially in LAB situations. Make up work is REQUIRED and the RESPONSIBILITY of the student. Refer to the attendance policy in student handbook.

FCCLA: Family Career and Community Leaders of America is an integral component of this course and is the student organization for Family and Consumer Sciences. The mission of the organization is to help students develop leadership abilities, expand workplace-readiness skills, and broaden opportunities for personal and professional growth. A fee of $25 is required to join and includes a t-shirt, state dues, and national dues.

Apparel and Textile Industries

  1. Define terminology used in the apparel and textile industries, including haute couture, avant-garde, composite garments, and draped garments.
  2. Analyze the impact of national and international regulations and legislation for fashion.

  4. Analyze the roles of trade associations and publications to determine influence on the apparel and textile industries.

Fashion Design

  1. Analyze space, tools, equipment, and furnishing requirements for a design studio.
  2. Explain the process that lead to fashion design.
  3. Demonstrate fashion illustration skills to design a fashion line, including sketching fashion figures and apparel, using varied media and techniques, and applying basic and complex color schemes.
  4. Apply elements and principles of design to create fashion.
  5. Demonstrate draping and flat pattern-making techniques.
  6. Demonstrate techniques used to create new designs from an original garment, accessory, or textile product.
  7. Design fashions to meet special needs of clients.
  8. Utilize technology to design and create fashion.

I will be your child’s instructor this semester. In order to provide your child and all students in my classroom the excellent educational environment they deserve, I have developed a discipline plan that will be in effect at all times.

When in my classroom, students must obey the following rules:

  1. Bring all needed materials to class.
  2. Be in the room before the bell rings.
  3. Listen and stay seated when someone is talking.
  4. Ask for permission to leave class and always take a hall pass.
  5. Respect the rights and property of others.
  6. Follow directions and ask questions as needed.
  7. Obey all school rules. (See student handbook)

If a student breaks a rule, the following consequences will occur:

  1. First infraction: Teacher warning
  2. Second infraction: Detention during Refuel and contact parent
  3. Third infraction: Contact parent(s) and principal

Attachment 5—Supply List

Every student MUST purchase his or her own set of the following sewing notions, sketching supplies and basic classroom supplies (most should already have their supplies from Fashion 1.) You will have your own bin in the classroom to store personal supplies for your portfolio and various sewing projects. I will provide you with many of the basic sewing notions and supplies not listed here for classroom use. The following should be included in your supply kit:

Sewing Supplies

  • Sewing scissors
  • Pincushion
  • Seam ripper
  • Measuring tape
  • Tracing wheel
  • Tracing paper
  • Chalk pencil
  • Fabric marking pen
  • Large quilting pins

Classroom Supplies

  • 2-3 inch binder
  • Loose leaf paper
  • Pencils and pens

Sketching Supplies

  • Sketch book
  • Coloring pencils
  • Pencil sharpener
  • Skinny black sharpies

Label everything with YOUR name to prevent mix-ups during labs. For scissors, tie a cute ribbon on them with your name written on the ribbon.

NOTE: As stated, there WILL be some projects where additional materials will need to be purchased.
