To celebrate the opening of Fred Tomaselli: Monstersof Paradise, on 9 March 2005, the Irish Museum of Modern Art is delighted to offer a limited edition Tomaselli print for sale.
Monsters of Paradise comprises some 25 recent paintings by New York-based artist Fred Tomaselli whose meticulous hybrid pictures are made using a dazzling array of materials including paint, pills, insects, photo-collage, leaves and flowers.
Tomaselli was born in Santa Monica, California, in 1956. Fascinated by artifice, he plunged into the post-punk counter-culture of late 1970s Los Angeles, before moving to New York to make art that explores ideas of utopia and dystopia, using objects both real and reproduced.
Many of the works featured in this exhibition have been made since 2002 and elevate figuration in Tomaselli’s work, revealing the artist’s intensely personal vision of the universe. Throughout his career Tomaselli has been interested in the concept of mapping, and the idea of finding one’s place in the world. Ultimately, the coming together of the natural world with the imposition or the discord of the human drive for order is a continual theme in his work.
Commenting on this particular piece, Fred Tomaselli said: “The drawing evolved out of a series of sketches I did last summer in a cabin overlooking the water in rural Maine...I started by drawing ripples and lobster buoys, which then hybridized with traditions from other worlds. This process eventually led to the image that became the print.”
The Edition is for sale, unframed, through the Friends Office at IMMA.
It will be on display in the IMMA foyer from March 2005.
