Adams State Adventure Program Internship

Adams State Adventure Program (ASAP) is looking to hire a qualified intern with outdoor leadership and recreation experience for a full time, 9-12 month-long internship. We desire applicants who are passionate about adventure based programming, leadership development, and willing to work hard and play hard. ASAP is part of the Student Life and Recreation Department at Adams State University in Alamosa, Colorado.ASAP is one of the oldest outdoor programs in the nation dating back to 1925.

The Intern will report directly to the Assistant Director of Adventure Programs. The ideal candidate has significant experience in outdoor adventure sports, is organized, able to prioritize tasks, and can work independently on projects. The candidate has an understanding of rental shop operations,proficiency withavarietyof technical outdoor skills, and has a strong educational skill set. The intern must be able to work flexible and sometimes long hours including weekends, holidays and nights. Opportunity for days off can be arranged with the Assistant Director. Applicants can expect a 70/30 split where 70% of your time is spent in the office completing administrative tasks and 30% in the field.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the management of the Adventure Programs Rental Shop, Climbing Wall, and Challenge Course
  • Support the work of the student managers and staff
  • Assist in program marketing including website, social media, print-based, etc.
  • Mentor students in the ASAP Apprenticeship Program
  • Offer workshops and clinics
  • Assisting in leading trips and other programs on and off campus
  • Assist in the assessment of staff competency and giving feedback
  • Assist with special events such as films and competitions
  • Bring new ideas to the table as to how to reach more students and community members

  • Fall & Spring Break extended trips

*ASAP also offers student and professional staff led programming for the local community and other universities.

Qualifications:

Minimum of two to three years experience with an adventure based program. Demonstrated experience leading of any of the trips and programs mentioned above. Candidates must be outgoing, friendly, familiar with feedback, and enjoy working with college students. Knowledge of outdoor equipment and repair is a must. Current WFR and CPR preferred. Preference will be given to members of AORE, WEA, NIRSA, or AEE and candidates with extensive field experience.Candidates pursuing a career in recreation, outdoor pursuits or student affairs are highly encouraged to apply.

Compensation:

  • Free Room (apartment style dorm)
  • ~20 meals / semester
  • Up to $6,000 for the total duration of the internship(actual pay is based on experience and length of internship - paid monthly)
