- Matters arising not on the agenda:
- Membership:
-A new member has been recommended by Shauna from the ED at Chelsea and Westminster - Denise Lenihan, Sister in the ED.
-DB will also ascertain as to who the current trauma is nursing ‘lead’ in the ED at C&W.
-ME confirmed that James Bird from the ED at St Mary’s had been identified to join this group and the NW trauma nursing group
- Trauma Development Programme – at the last meeting we did not have time to table the new version. This will be tabled at this meeting – see below.
- Trauma coordinators role descriptor documents:
Group discussed:
- The descriptors have been requested by the NHSE (London) Trauma ODN Steering Group to assist Trust’s in developing their trauma coordinator service as required in the TQuINS trauma measures.
- The trauma measures require:
-The service must be 7 days a week at the MTC or Paediatric MTC (if applicable) and personnel at Band 7
-The service must be Mon-Fri in TU’s – no banding is stipulated
-The service can be delivered by nurses or AHPs.
Rough outline as per RP and MT discussion and feedback from the meeting:
Key headings:
- Reception and resuscitation of trauma patients
-System in place to ensure the trauma coordinator service is aware of all primary trauma patients attending the ED.
- Trauma patient pathway management:
-Overview of all trauma patients in the Trust at any one time
- Secondary transfers:
-Assist with the allocation of patients to speciality
-Ensures patient are transferred back to their unit as per-secondary transfer standards.
-Working with the rehabilitation coordinator (as required in the measures) to ensure rehabilitation prescriptions are in place.
- Governance:
-Member of the Trust’s trauma board/committee
-Represents the Trust art regional/network level
-Participates in trauma M&M/review strategies
-Maintains a Trust trauma risk register
-TARN
- Dependant on local arrangement – oversight of TARN data with the Network Manager.
- Generates local reports
- Leads/participates in local and network wide audits as required of TARN
- Participates in the development of local guidelines and policies
- Actively identifies areas of weakness in the patient pathway and seeks to address these as appropriate
- Preparation of peer review reports
- Active role during the peer review visitation
- Can form part of a peer review team reviewing other networks/sites.
- Training and education:
-Identifies, via an annual training needs analysis, key educational priorities, programmes and pathways.
- Research and audit:
-Where applicable, active involvement in trauma research portfolio /
- MT to send round draft documents for coordinator services at MTC and TU for comment.
- Final draft required by 26th February 2016 for submission to the ODN Trauma Steering Group.
- Trauma ward nursing competencies:
All steering group members are requested to review the draft competencies and give feedback to ME directly -
Group feedback and comment at the meeting:
- LL asked regarding paediatric ward competencies. Group acknowledged that this initial work was focussed on adult ward areas but could be adapted to reflect paediatric ward care later.
- ME keen not to make the competencies to detailed so as to be unmanageable. ME asked for copies of local policies/competencies which could be inserted into this document.
- A section on special considerations suggested, to include sub-sections on the care of the:
-Bariatric patient
-Substance dependency
-Mental health
-Pregnancy /
- All members: Feedback on first draft to ME directly.
- ME:2nd draft for review at next PLTNG meeting on the 5th May 2016
- End of February 2016.

- National Major Trauma Nursing Group (NMTNG)– update:
- The trauma equivalence statement has now been approved (sent to group members with agenda for this meeting)
- NMTNG now seeking endorsement/support from:
- National Major Trauma CRG
- RCN
- RCEM
- College of paramedics
- Work with NHSE Quality Surveillance Team - new TQuINS trauma measures:
- Two meeting held to date with the team to input into the new trauma measures due for release in April 2016.
- NMTNG will be helping to develop a stand-alone trauma nursing measure for emergency departments.
- RP acknowledged that whilst it won’t influence this re-iteration, our hope is that in future there would also be detailed measures for trauma critical care and trauma ward nursing.
- Major Trauma ODN steering group – Update:
- EC updated group on the new London Trauma System (LTS) website:
- RP has been asked to liaise with Nicole Skeltys at the LTS to develop the nursing section.
- EC invited members to look at the web site and suggest additions to their network sub-sections. Website can be found here:
- Steering group currently focussed on:
- Development of ‘local measures’ to supplement the national measures. This includes our work on the trauma coordinators descriptors.
- Reviewing and preparing for the peer review process for this year, essentially:
- MTC will self-assess
- TU’s will be peer reviewed
- Mass casualty incident Pan-Networks policy – work continues on developing the document.
- Network feedback
Update from HL:
Quarterly network nursing meeting continue.
Recent focus on trauma patient feedback strategies.
SE
RP – Network nursing CRG have struggled to meet. No further update from minutes of the last meeting in November 2015.
NW & NE
ME reported that there is now support from the network to establish a nursing group. This will initially take the form a joint nursing group with the NE and which plans to hold its first meeting on the 23rd February 2016.
This will also lead to the possibility of setting up joint NW & NE M&M meetings.
- Trauma development programme:
RP and DB tabled the revised version which they had both been working on for approval.
No edits , amendments required: Quorate – Yes = Approved
It is envisaged that the national work, which is seeking to set out 3 levels of practice, will inform a further revision of the template which will best reflect the three tier structure. / RP to re-send development programme template with these minutes / By end of February 2016
