Screen Archive South East

An Introduction

Screen Archive South East (SASE) is the publicly funded regional screen archive for the South East of England. Its function is to collect preserve and provide public access to the screen material in its care. SASE is dedicated to making its collection, and knowledge about it, available for public and scholarly use.

The main reason for the acquisition of material is that it has clear associations with the South East of England (counties of East and West Sussex, Kent, Surrey and the unitary authorities of Brighton & Hove and Medway). Items accepted by SASE should have most of the following characteristics:

  • the subject matter represents, life work and creativity in the region;
  • it has been produced in the region either by or about an individual, family, community, society, institution or company;
  • it has demonstrable historical, cultural and educational value;
  • it informs and enhances our knowledge of our existing collections.

How we make material publicly accessible:

SASE accepts responsibility for the long-term preservation of the material. The items will be transferred to a digital format. A master digital copy is created from the original and then access copies are created for the depositor and other users. Once license permissions are in place (agreed with the depositor) SASE will allow further public access by:

  • publishinginformation and clips online;
  • including material in compilation DVDs;
  • providing students and researchers, members of the public, local community projects, history societies, artists, film festivals, museums and libraries with free or subsidised access to the material;
  • allowing commercial access to broadcasters and corporate clients.

Any revenue after costs will be invested in preservation of material in the collection.
