News and reports from Broad Oak Trout Lakes March 2015

Spring is on its way! The birds think so at least, and the fly life is beginning to emerge. So get your kit sorted out and take advantage of our shop offer!

Fly of the Month

It is hard to pick a fly of the month for Februaryas there was a real mix. Damsel Nymphs of green, black and orange, plus Blood Worm, Viva and an occasional Daddy Long-legs all caught fish! We seem to have seen off the worst of the frosts and now look forward to the return of flying things to tempt those trout.

Last years’ promisingMarchflies were Damsels and Buzzers with Gold Ribbed Hares’ Ear and Pheasant-Tailed Nymphs coming on later in the month. There must be a few pheasant feathers out there – so try tying your own. There will be fly-tying demos at the improver days if you would like to learn how.

Catch of the Month –February

The biggest fish of the month goes to Gordon Walters for his ‘at least 6lb – it was too big to fit in the net’ brownie caught and returned in Oak Tree Lake on a Viva. He still bears the mental scars of the battle. What a fish!

The biggest rainbow was 3.5 lbs also hooked in Oak Tree Lake on an orange damsel by Danny Crow. The water was coloured after heavy rain.

Mentioned in Dispatches

Ryan Hill caught his first ever rainbow trout on Acorn Lake using a donated Corixa (thank you John F) on his brand new rod. Well done!

Weather Forecast (taken from Met Office website)

March looks to be a mixed bag! Cool and unsettled for the first part, followed by cool and more settled later on. Not much help there then! Less chance of prolonged periods of frost (and therefore ice) though, so nothing to stop the fishing!
