EASTERN ONTARIO CHAMPIONSHIP SUPREME 2006

The Games scene in Eastern Ontario just continues to get bigger and bigger every year. There are now “indoor” Games in Almonte, Winchester and Kingston, and the traditional outdoor Games at Spencerville, Maxville, Montreal and Almonte. In recognition of this abundance of participation in the spring/summer local piping and drumming activities, starting in 2006, an Eastern Ontario Championship Supreme will be awarded to the soloists and bands accumulating the most points over the seven events. Points will be assigned based on placings at each contest, and to be eligible for the Eastern Ontario Championship Supreme award, the competitor/band must have competed at a minimum of four of the seven contests. More details will follow through-out the year ahead.

If anyone in the Ottawa Branch has motions to be made at the PPBSO Annual General Meeting on 26 November 2005, please make sure they are forwarded ASAP to anyone on the Ottawa Branch executive to ensure that they have time to be circulated and reviewed in time to be discussed at the 08 October 2005 Ottawa Branch meeting.

OPENING KNOCK-OUT CONTESTS….. Saturday 08 October 2005

As a result of much prompting, we will again run the popular amateur knock-out contest this season. The year will start with our traditional 4/4 March contest for the pipers (four parts, one or two tunes) to determine the split for the “A” and “B” divisions, and a 6/8 March contest for the drummers (four parts, one or two tunes).

Knock-Out Contest Date… Saturday 08 October 2005. Time… 7:30 pm. To keep the evening from running too late, all competitors are asked to be registered by 7:15 pm. If you can’t make it by 7:15, please contact any of the Ottawa Branch executive in advance to reserve a spot in the draw. Place… the Walkey Road Armouries, 2100 Walkley Road, between St. Laurent Blvd and Conroy Ave (the Armouries are on the south side of Walkley Ave, right beside the Walkley Bowling Centre parking lot). *** NOTE: do not park in the reserved parking spots, the Armouries are a 24/7 facility ***.

Again in 2005…… all attendees at our Ottawa Branch meetings at the Walkley Mess will be required to pay the $5.00 cover charge, COMPETITORS INCLUDED. Although it would have been preferred to continue the practice of allowing competitors in for free, the cost of doing business continues to rise. We unfortunately need to try to keep pace.

BLACK WATCH CEILIDH

Just weeks from now (01 October 2005), the tradition continues at the Black Watch Armoury. Come support the oldest organized Pipes & Drums in North America. The Ceilidh features the Montreal Celtic Band "Solstice" in a big band format that has yet to be seen anywhere. Those who have been to our events before know of the core that make up the band. Pat Lesyk does lead vocals and plays guitar, Jonothon Moorman on backup vocals and fiddle, and the electrifying Dave Gossage on flutes, whistles and guitars. They are now joined by a keyboard player and a drummer for a sound which fiddler Jon promises to be "bigger and more concert-like, but with the high energy of the pub shows..." Also featured are the many members of the Montreal Highland Dancing Association, who will perform a variety of dances for the crowd, including crowd favorites like the Sword Dance and the Strathspey & Half-Tulloch Reel. The night is not complete without Pipes & Drums, and the Regimental P&D are there all evening. They will play as a band, as a mini-band, solo and in many other combinations throughout the evening. If you love the Pipes & Drums, bring a friend and come on down, you are sure to have a good time! The Black Watch Ceilidh, 01 October 2005 at 7pm. For further info, go to www.pipermacbear.com.

ROY (MOGABE) DROUIN

(1927-2005)

Roy began his military career as a boy soldier at the age of fourteen. He served in Canada, Korea, Cyprus and Europe, retiring in September 1977. He played with the Air Command Pipes and Drums of Ottawa from 1973 through 2005, was in regular attendance at all PPBSO Ottawa Branch functions, and was a long-standing member of the Bells Corners Legion. He is survived by his daughter Laura.

Roy was well-known for his “Roy-isms”, which were not a rare occurrence. When a former Pipe Major asked the band if anyone had any bagpipe problems, Roy immediately yelled out “YEAH! I don’t like the sound of them!!!”. At a practice a few years ago a tune was called out that had not been played for a while, and when someone asked how the tune started, without missing a beat Roy said “Boom, Boom, Boom!!”. Suffice it to say, Roy was a very unique character.

His favourite quote was “What am I…. chopped liver?”. His favourite tune…. the great 6/8 march, Miss Ishabel T. MacDonald.

Roy was loved by ALL and will be greatly missed.

Glengarry (Maxville) Highland Games Saturday 30 July 2005

This year’s Games at Maxville, Ontario witnessed ideal weather conditions with record crowds in attendance.

The Friday evening Tattoo included twelve local bands, including the Ceremonial Guard, and we were pleased to have the Black Watch (RHR) from Montreal join the massed bands this year. In addition to the massed bands, the Ceremonial Guard was a hit, as usual, with their special selections and arrangements of music as a tribute to the Veterans. Members of the RCMP Pipes and Drums (NCR) also joined the Brigadoons in performing, “The Pipers & Drums”, written by Ken MacRae, which paid tribute to the four Mounties killed this year at Mayerthorp and also the Veterans.
