Target Curriculum: Math

Target Grade: K

SOL: K.6 - The student, given a set containing (12) or fewer objects, will select the corresponding numeral from a given set of numerals.

Objective:

After studying about individual numerals to 12, students will use a laminated game board of the attached sheet to match the total number of dots on the dice to the numeral listed on the page.

Purpose:

To review and assess selection of numerals to twelve from a given set.

Materials:

Numeral chart; large, inflatable dice; small, foam dice; dry erase markers and laminated game boards for Cross Off the Numeral.

Procedure:

1.  Review the written/posted objective and repeat as a class: “Today we will select the corresponding numeral from a given set of numerals.” When/if students ask about the word, “corresponding,” use this as an additional teaching moment for utilizing the dictionary to determine the meaning of a word.

2.  Begin by asking the students, “ Does anyone here have a favorite number? Maybe no one has ever asked you that question before! Most of us have a favorite color, but what about a favorite number?... For instance, I have always liked the numbers 7 and 12, although I can’t tell you WHY I like those two numbers more than others. Take about 15 seconds to tell your shoulder buddy if you have a favorite number and why. ” Discuss; then write their responses on magnetic dry-erase cards and stick on the board in a column in random order.

3.  Try to get 5-6 different answers and then ask the students, “What do we need to do to put these in order from smallest to largest?” Call on students to rearrange numerals in a column from smallest to largest, using number chart as a guide, if necessary.

4.  Afterwards, guide the students in determining the missing numerals between 1-12 and fill in accordingly; explain that those “favorite numbers” above 12 will be used at later times in the year.

5.  Now, draw a t-chart around that column and duplicate the numerals 1-12 on the right-hand side, so as to have two columns of identical numerals.

6.  Next, use the large inflatable die, of which students are already familiar, to toss. Call on a student to count the number of dots on the face-up side.

7.  Ask another student to locate the corresponding numeral from the column on the board and use a dry-erase marker to cross it off.

8.  Roll the die again, asking another student to count the dots and another student to cross off the corresponding numeral on the right-hand column.

9.  On the third roll, use BOTH inflatable dice and combine the dots “altogether.”

10.  Explain to students that they are going to work in pairs to play this game, using a game board, two dice and a dry-erase marker. Taking turns to roll either one die or two – player’s choice – the goal is to mark off all your numerals. The first player to do so wins the game.

Closure: At the end of the activity, ask students to share what they learned today by asking, “How is it that every numeral got crossed off?” Answer – The numerals on the game board matched the dots on the die/dice. “What was the smallest numeral you could roll? The largest? Was it possible to roll a thirteen? Why/why not?

Observations:

Students who are just developing number sense may need only one die and a game board with numbers from only 1-6.

Conclusion:

As this will be the first time using the “Cross Off” strategy, my hope is that the students will really enjoy playing it and that it will afford me the opportunity to assess informally while doing so. There are so many more variations I could use, such as “Cross-off the Sum,” as originally presented, or a game board with tally marks, for instance.

Extension:

Those students who are more advanced in number sense will easily able to determine whether they need to roll one or both dice in order to get their missing numerals on their column.

Cross Off the Numeral

Number of players: 2

Materials: Laminated game board; two dotted cubes (dice); dry erase markers; paper towel.

Directions:

a)  Player One rolls one dotted cube, counts the dots on the face-up side and then crosses off the corresponding numeral in their column.

b)  Player Two rolls, counts and crosses off corresponding numeral.

c)  Players must determine when to roll both dice in order to continue crossing-off numerals.

d)  A roll that duplicates a numeral already crossed off results in the next player’s turn.
