Champions falter again as CBH and Nantwich move ahead

WITH reigning champions Alderley Edge losing for the third time in four games on a day when Top Two Chester Boughton Hall and Nantwich both won comfortably, the ECB Premier League title race is narrowing.

Chester remain 12 points clear of the Dabbers after registering their 12th win, a comfortable eight wickets affair at home to wooden-spoonists Bowdon they bowled out for 89, number eight batsman Robert Shenkman top-scoring with 28 after eight others had failed to reach double figures. Doing the damage were seamers Will Owen with 6-45 and Alex Kegg, 3-18.

Chester had the match won in just 20 overs after tea at 92-2, Alex Money 29 not out.

Nantwich won by seven wickets at Hyde, despatching the Werneth Low club to 11th place with relegation becoming a reality. James Duffy, 33 and Dan Berry, 30 top-scored in Hyde’s inadequate tally of 100, the two Olivers - Freckingham 4-32 and Griffriths 3-20 – doing the damage. Luke Robinson scored an unbeaten 30 in the Dabbers’ comfortable reply of 105-3 in 23 overs.

Alderley Edge lost a higher scoring game by 19 runs at Cheadle, who have edged out of the relegation zone as a result The winners totalled 237-7, Dan Brown contributing a splendid, unbeaten 95 and Greg Dixon 55, Andy Windle 3-54. In reply Alderley lost their last wicket at 218, Khalid Sawas 77, Tom Foreman 32, while Harry Appleyard claimed a vital 4-61 for the Kingsway men

Timperley pitch settles

Timperley’s ground continues to improve and there were nearly 400 runs scored there against Toft before the home side won by one wicket in a tense finish. Toft totalled 190, number 10 Joe Gates top scoring with 41, while Tyrone Lawrence produced the splendid return of 6-36. Timperley just made it at 192-9 thanks to Dan Cooper, 45 and Matt Brown, 34 not out, Andy Jackson taking 4-31.

Neston stay in the top half after beating Bramhall by seven wickets at Parkgate. Lancashire’s Danny Lamb top-scored with 66 in Bramhall’s all-out 146, Prithvi Sarvaiya taking 4-8 and Ash Davis 3-28. A typically fluent knock of 73 by Will Evans and 34 by David Hurst saw Neston home at 149-3 in just 27 overs.

Didsbury dominated their visit to Grappenhall to win by 72 runs after posting a best-of-the-day 238 pre-tea. Top scorers were skipper Nick Anderson with 47 and Simon Normanton, 37, while Sam Guest took 3-50. Ever erratic, Grappers were later dismissed for 176, James McCoy 66. Normanton completed a fine personal performance with 4-49 and Matt Gregson, 3-62.

Oulton Park play like champions

OULTON Park looked like Division One champions-elect when they disposed of close rivals Macclesfield by 41 runs in a low-scoring game at Little Budworth to establish a 35 points lead.

After a 10-match unbeaten run which included seven wins, Macclesfield were favourites at tea by which time they had dismissed their hosts for 130, Mark Latham 32, Craig Melrose 4-62, Ollie Marsden 3-6.

But Park hit back and a combination of fine catches by Craig Douglas, Matt Jamieson and Muhammed Kashif, incisive bowling notably by Kashif – who has played international cricket for Holland – plus Pat Roberts’ smart captaincy, saw Macc bowled oi=ut for 89. Off-spinner Kashif took 5-19 to reach 54 wickets for the season, while part-time seamer Martin East snaffled 3-4.

Oulton now top the table from Widnes, who survived a narrow situation to win by two wickets at Weaverham, whose defeat signalled their relegation. Top scorer for Weaverham was Kevin Douglas with 37 while Marcus Fourie took 4-42. Widnes were made to struggle and lost eight wickets reaching 208, led by Alex Hewitt 89, while George McCormick took 3-47.

Marple edged up to fourth place with a seven wickets win at Urmston, Mark Bennett hitting an unbeaten 100, the day’s only League ton. With Paul Wood, 93 not out, he added an unbroken 193 for the fourth wicket in a response of 210-3. Batting first, Urmston had totalled 209-5, Furkan Hassan 50, Andy Greasley 3-47.

Davenham were trounced by 10 wickets at Upton and can say goodbye to promotion on current form. They were bowled out for a paltry 43 in 29 overs, having no answer to the accuracy of Liam Sundve who took 6-21 and Chris McArthur, 3-21. Upton knocked the runs off in 11 overs, McArthur 31 not out.

Sale virtually assured themselves of Division One status next season when they won by three wickets at Oxton, whom they bowled out for 170, Dane Williams 66, Richard Adams 3-16, Brooke Guest 3-24. Jeremy McFarlane scored 65 as Sale replied with 161-7, Richard Fennah 3-33, Dane Williams 3-45.

Bollington sent Warrington a step nearer relegation with a 98-run victory at the Recreation Ground. Bolly totalled 189-9, number nine batsman Peter Henshall 40, James Rudd 4-57. Warrington were dismissed for 91, tail ender Aaron Soni top scoring with 28 against good bowling by Jack Ward, 5-18 and swift Barbadian Dario Seale 3-27.

Alvanley take lead in Division 2

ALVANLEY went top of Division 2 for the first time when they won by 13 runs at Bredbury St. Mark’s, returning their hosts to bottom place.

Alvanley were bowled out for 135, number 10 batsman Lee Ainsworth contributing a vital unbeaten 44, while John Usher took 5-31 and Chris Wood 3-22. But Bredbury mustered only 122 in reply, Major Khan 41, Billy Ouzinidis claiming a match-winning 5-34.

Alvaney deposed Romiley, who were bowled out for 63 and beaten by 72 runs at resurgent Tattenhall, who batted first to post 135, number 8 batsman Ryan Spencer scoring 44 and fourth change bowler James Badrock took 5-35. The Cheshire Shield holders were bundled out for 63 after tea, Gary Forster taking 4-21 and Alan Brock 3-18.

Cheadle Hulme ended a run of nine successive defeats since June 17 with a six wicket victory at second placed Barrow, to give themselves an outside chance of avoiding the drop. Barrow totalled just 126-9, Maneesh Nissanka 40, Mohammed Umeer 4-15, to which ‘Hulme replied with 129-4, Muhammed Saad 53, Ben Haigh 30.

Stockport won their 10th game and moved up to third place only 26 points behind the leaders with a nine wicket stroll at Christleton, whom they bowled out for 105, Joshua Joseph 31, Mark Green 5-34. Stockport replied with 107-1, George Barber 55 not out.

Brooklands kept up their good form with a four wickets home victory over Mobberley, whom they sent back for 131, Matt Rose contributing 32 at nine, while Chris Potter took 3-21. The best batsman in the division, Aussie Kevin Carroll, hit an unbeaten 89 in Brooklands’ reply of 133-6, aided by skipper A.J Hart 36, with Abdul Aqeel taking 5-64.

Northwich’s improvement continued in a tight finish at Lindow, who scored 141 batting first, Alex Matthews 36, James Plant 5-31, Andy Dufty 3-41. Northwich scraped home at 145-9 thanks to tail enders Mike McDonough and Andy Dufty. Earlier Matt Dufty had scored 47 and James Plant 39, while Tim Young capturing 4-31 and Ben Tyler 3-40 keeping Lindow in the game until the very end.
