IDC Internship Program 2016

The International Detention Coalition (IDC) is a unique global network, of over 300 civil society organisations and individuals in more than 70 countries, that advocate for, research and provide direct services to refugees, asylum-seekers and migrants affected by immigration detention.

The IDC works to ensure that the human rights of refugees, asylum seekers and migrants impacted by immigration detention are respected, protected and fulfilled.The IDC aims to bring about changes in legislation, policy and practice that prevent, mitigate and respond to the harms associated with immigration detention and that promote alternatives to detention.The IDC does this through network and capacity building, advocacy, awareness raising and campaigns, research and reporting.

The IDC internship program is a six-month commitment, preferably from February – July 2016, in the Secretariat Office based in Melbourne, Australia.

The IDC internship program aims to develop the skills of those looking for experience in the not-for-profit sector. People with a migrant background and/or peoplewith experience working on migration issues in a human rights context are encouraged to apply. Applicants are expected to commit to a minimum of 5 hours a week. There is no remuneration available for these positions.

Communications Intern – Global Campaign to End Child Detention

The Global Campaign to End Immigration Detention of Children ( was launched during the 19thSession of the United Nations Human Rights Council in 2012, to draw attention to the many detrimental effects that immigration detention has on children, and to encourage States to cease the immigration detention of children, consistent with their Convention on the Rights of the Child obligations.

The Communications Officer responsibilities include:

  • Assist the Communications Coordinator in all aspects of producing campaign communications materials (newsletter, web-posts, social media)
  • Conduct website maintenance including SEO
  • Complete monthly statistics reporting and evaluate the effectiveness of campaign communications in line with the campaign strategic plan

  • Experience with social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram)
  • Strong computer skills
  • Experience with WordPress and Google Analytics will be considered favorably
  • Experience in design and using the Adobe Creative Suite will be considered favorably

Global Advocacy Communications Intern – International Detention Coalition

The Global Advocacy communications intern will play a vital role in communication support for the Advocacy regional coordinator, who is based in Geneva.

The Advocacy Communications intern responsibilities include:

  • Assist the Communications Coordinator in all aspects of producing IDC communications materials pertaining to global advocacy relevant to immigration detention and alternatives to detention
  • Maintain the idc advocacy twitter account
  • Complete monthly web posts to be included in the monthly newsletter

Key selection criteria:

  • An ability to spread the word about human rights in the right language for your audience
  • Experience with social media (Facebook, Twitter)
  • Strong computer skills, and experience with WordPress and Google Analytics will be considered favorably
  • Experience in design and using the adobe creative suite will be considered favorably
  • Demonstrated experience or interest in relevant international advocacy will be considered favorably

Americas Communications Intern – International Detention Coalition

The Americas communications intern will play a vital role in communication support for the Americas RegionalOffice, which is based in Mexico City.

The Communications intern responsibilities include:

  • Assist the Communications Coordinator in all aspects of producing IDC communications materials for the region
  • Maintain the regional twitter account in Spanish & English
  • Complete monthly web posts in Spanish and English to be included in the monthly newsletter

Key selection criteria:

  • An ability to spread the word about human rights in the right language for your audience, confident writing skills in both English and Spanish
  • Experience with social media (Facebook, Twitter)
  • Strong computer skills, and experience with WordPress and Google Analytics will be considered favorably
  • Experience in design and using the Adobe Creative Suite will be considered favorably
  • Demonstrated experience or interest in the region will be considered favorably
  • Demonstrated experience in communications work in both English and Spanish is preferred

Europe Communications Intern – International Detention Coalition

The Europe communications intern will play a vital role in communication support for the Europe regional coordinator, who is based in London.

The Communications intern responsibilities include:

  • Assist the Communications Coordinator in all aspects of producing IDC communications materials for the region
  • Maintain the regional twitter account

The Asia Pacific communications intern will play a vital role in communication support for the Asia Pacific Regional Coordinator, who is based in Malaysia.

The Communications intern responsibilities include:

MENA Communications Intern – International Detention Coalition

The Middle East North Africa (MENA) communications intern will play a vital role in communication support for the MENA Regional Coordinator, who is based in London.

The Communications intern responsibilities include:

  • Assist the Communications Coordinator in all aspects of producing IDC communications materials for the region
  • Maintain the regional twitter account
  • Complete monthly web posts to be included in the monthly newsletter

Key selection criteria:

  • An ability to spread the word about human rights in the right language for your audience
  • Experience with social media (Facebook, Twitter)
  • Strong computer skills, and experience with WordPress and Google Analytics will be considered favorably

Africa Communications Intern – International Detention Coalition

The Africa communications intern will play a vital role in communication support for the Africa Regional Coordinator, who is based in London.

The Communications intern responsibilities include:

  • Assist the Communications Coordinator in all aspects of producing IDC communications materials for the region
  • Maintain the regional twitter account
  • Complete monthly web posts to be included in the monthly newsletter

Research Intern – International Detention Coalition

The IDC is currently in the process of establishing a formal research program and is seeking the assistance of an intern to support the research coordinator in shaping this emerging and dynamic field of study. This research will be shared across the IDC network including for advocacy at the international, regional and local levels.

The Research Intern responsibilities include:

  • Assisting the Research Coordinator in undertaking research tasks including literature review(s), desktop data collection and grant applications
  • Support the communication of research findings via social media
  • Assist in the preparation of presentations

Key Selection Criteria:

- Demonstrated experience in social research methods including literature reviews

- Demonstrated interest in social justice issues, particularly in the area of migration

- Experience in the use of social media, particularly in a professional capacity

- Experience in the use of Endnote will be well regarded

- Bachelor's degree in social sciences, health, psychology, law, politics will be well regarded

Capacity Building Intern – International Detention Coalition

The IDC is currently in the process of establishing a formal capacity building program and is seeking the assistance of an intern to support the coordinator in shaping this emerging and dynamic program. The capacity building program targets the IDC network at the international, regional and local levels.

The Capacity Building responsibilities include:

  • Assisting the Capacity Building Coordinator in developing online training materials, including video editing
  • Support the roll out of an online training program
  • Assist in the planning of regional and/or domestic training events

Key Selection Criteria:

  • Advanced computer skills demonstrated by your ability to use a range of software programs
  • Demonstrated interest in social justice issues, particularly in the area of migration
  • Experience in the use of Adobe Captivate and/or PowerPoint
  • Video editing skills will be highly regarded
