Appendix 5: the interviewees

Interview 1:

E(female, in her late twenties) is an English citizen, a university student, who moved to Copenhagenfor an internship at an international NGO in the city less than five months prior to the interview. She is considering moving to Denmark permanently when she graduates due to her boyfriend S, whom she met shortly after she arrived to Copenhagen, and who also partook in this study (interview 5). The interview was conducted and transcribed in English.

Interview 2:

D(female, in her forties) is a Polish Catholic who moved to Denmark in 1992 when she married a Dane. She has since divorced but lives today with another Danish man, still in Denmark. She has a higher education diploma from Poland, speaks Danish and is a city employee in a small town on the island of Zealand. Her citizenship status is unknown to the author.

Interview 3:

M(male, in his thirties) is an Arab Muslim, who moved to Denmark from Lebanon in 1985. He is a Palestinian and married to a Palestinian woman. Both reside in a small town on Zealand. He is well educated (BA or equivalent) and works professionally with refugees in Denmark. His citizenship status is unknown to the author.

Interview 4:

T(male, in his early sixties) is a Danish citizen. He’s a retired school teacher, who resides in Copenhagen with his wife, who is also Danish. He was involved in refugee initiatives in the beginning on 1990’ies and he has an interest in immigrants and immigrant policies.

Interview 5:

S(male, in his early thirties) was born in Malaysia but moved to a small town in Denmark with his family when he was 11 years old. He has dual Danish/Malaysian citizenship.Today he has an MSc degree and works at the NGO in Copenhagen where his girlfriend E is an intern. They live together.

Interview 6:

Z(male, in his mid-fifties), is a Catholic Croat, who came to Denmark as a refugee in 1992. He has a higher education diploma from Bosnia and a dual Danish/Croatian citizenship. He speaks Danish and works as a city employee in a small town on Zealand while he resides in Copenhagen with his Serbian wife who is Russian orthodox. The interview was conducted and transcribed in Serbo-Croatian.

Interview 7:

P(male, in his late twenties) is a Danish citizen, who grew up in Jutland but has been living in Copenhagen for ten years. He is a professional chef but is currently enrolled in college upgrading his skills. He was interviewed with his girlfriendB, (female, in her mid-twenties), in their shared apartment. Bwas born in Bosnia to a Serbian mother and a Croatian father Z(interview 6). She moved to Denmark with her family in 1992, but has spent the last 3 years in England where she earned an MBA. She is currently employed in Copenhagen as a financial advisor.
