IET Faraday Challenge Day

The School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE), The University of Manchester, will be hosting an IET Faraday Challenge Day on Thursday 15 June 2017. We are looking for participating teams of six YEAR 8 school students (12-13 year olds) and a teacher, one team from each of six local schools (students should have a particular interest in science, D&T, or maths; and the group should be an equal mix of boys and girls).

IET Faraday Challenge Days give students the opportunity to research, design and make prototype solutions to genuinely tough engineering problems. The specific topic will be unveiled on the day. At each event teams compete to win a prize for themselves and a trophy for their school.

The event is set up and run by the IET’s team of STEM professionals and this year is sponsored by Bosch so there will be no cost to your school except for travel to the University venue. The day will run from 09.00-15.00 at a single location.

This is a national competition with more than 145 events running from October 2016 to June 2017. The top three teams from across the UK get an all-expenses-paid trip to the National Final in June each year to compete for a cash prize of up to £1,000 for their school.

Please contact to register your interest.

The Young Persons’ Forum

The University of Manchester invites local Y10 – 13 students to take part in focus groups to review our activity ideas, materials and publications. This helps us to ensure that what we're offering is relevant to our audience.

As well as receiving a £10 gift card per session, it is a great opportunity for students to demonstrate valuable transferable skills, such as communication and teamwork skills, and to gain an insight into university life. Taking part in a university focus group also looks great on a student’s CV.

The students are picked up from their school/college and dropped home after the sessions by Mantax, whose drivers are all DBS checked. Please note we can only accept students who live a maximum of 30 minutes’ taxi journey away from the University. We currently have two sessions for this academic year:

Thursday 9th March 2017, 4.30pm-6.30pm

Thursday 6th July 2017, 4.30pm-6.30pm

If you know any local Y10-13 students who would benefit from this opportunity, please point them in the direction of Sophie ().
