****For this day’s lesson, pass out the Leveled Reader you have been reading. You will need to go back to the subheading/topic that you chose to read to the students on Day 5 to help complete this lesson.
Review the objectives with the students. Let them know that they will be employing an after reading strategy. The after reading strategy is to summarize what was read.
Students will be using the GIST strategy (you may choose either the 32 word GIST or the 20 word GIST template depending on the level of students in your group) with you.
Pass out the GIST template worksheet and reread the subheading/topic. Model for the students how to complete the GIST. Using the 32 word Gist, work with the student to write a 32 word summary using the 5 W’s and the H within the summary.
When done, read the summary and ask them if it summarizes what you read together.
------
Review the objectives with the students and explain to them that today they will be working independently, using the GIST strategy to create their own summaries.
Students are to use the Subheading/topic that they used when completing their open-ended responses on Day 8.
Students are to work on their GIST and summary. Assist students are needed.
Before the end of the period, have students read some of their summaries. Remind them that summarizing is a great strategy for them to better understand what they read.
